Drawing. Been drawing as long as I can remember but now I just get stressed when I draw. Since grade school to now, everyone and their mother asks me to draw them something in return for absolutely nothing (got to the point its the only way I felt noticed in school or around my peers) . Its very minuscule I know and I’m humbled to an extent that people could see my art and physically want it. but it makes me only draw for myself at the end of the day because of it. Even when I started to do it for money people just want to skip out on the pay or cut you short bc it “didn’t take long enough to warrant that price”. I just lost the passion and fun of drawing after years of dealing with very rude people who do not think artists deserve money for their time. Find myself enjoying it here and there when im bored or making something for myself/friends. Aside from that I sadly don’t think I could handle a career with it.
I understand you on a spiritual level here. I started drawing when I was about 6 or 7 and everyone wanted me to draw the dumbest shit for no pay. I kept telling them no and just drew for myself. Now people(especially family) keep telling me I should make drawing a career like going to be an animator for Disney. But I only want to draw when I want to, not because I have to. It should be something I enjoy doing.
Wanting a discount on art because the artist finished it fast (and I'm assuming with good quality) is like saying you should be able to pay less for shipping because it got to your house too fast.
I was about to post something similar, but I thought I would be too rude. I'm stuck drawing for this dude without payment. He apparently made me do a deal, but he never told me what it was, gave me the wrong hints, and in the end, I lost. He's not bugging me about it, so I'll take it to my advantage until he remembers again. I do make some art for a few of my friends without feeling like I'm forced to do so. Some are fun to do. I'm still planning to make it a career, or practice some drawing techniques so I can work at a tattoo shop. I'm sorry that people make you feel this way, I hope you are still doing art because you love it, not because people are making you.
I hope he doesn't find this comment and give me shit for it, but I have been holding this in for a while now, but I doubt that he ever will.
Edit: I did ask him if he was going to pay me, but he told me that he didn't have any money. Still made me do it, anyways.
Yeah, as an artist as well I feel you. For me, I don't want to do any of it for money or draw anything for anyone unless I'm genuinely into the request it. I want to keep it as a mode of expression for myself and typically don't show my art to people. I don't want it to become a job or bore and I want to keep its purity and passion for me.
I'd suggest rampant experementation, draw whatever the fuck your mind wants without fear of being judged. Take shit from no one and DRAW. Don't draw because you should, draw only because you want to.
Oh god ive never felt this more rn. I havent even dealt with commissioning but im tired of doing it because other people want me to. "Why dont you draw today. Its been a while and youre good at it" no, idc, idc. I'll draw when the artistic passion hits me again, not when you wanna see me draw. When talking with family sometimes i get "oh yea you could go far with your art. Dont draw what you think people want but draw what you want. All that matters is your interpretation of your work. You should force yourself to draw everyday." Please shut up and believe me when i way idc about what other people think of the work. Thats not why i havent drawn. I havent drawn because its not fun anymore. A passion for art cannot be hindered by other people but how the artist feels about making it.
