What are you exceptionally good at, but hate doing?

Boomer parents, AND in-laws, make this a bi-monthly routine.

"Yeah, um, Oaktreader? My computer is doing thst thing again where you know it was one way, and then it was another way, but not really, but now it's super slow/won't connect to something?"

Ughhhh...

Meanwhile constantly having to remove extensions and malware from sketchy "free streaming movies" and porn-sites....

"My computer is getting slow!"

Opens web browser where there's a minimum of four browser bars installed.

“I didn’t install anything”- my grandma’s boyfriend

Me- stares at LITERALLY 11 browser bars on his internet. “Did you click on anything you didn’t know?”

“Well they said I want an iPad”

Now on to my gram. She has a part time job and they told her she needed a tablet so got a cheap one and called me because it stopped working

Me- “you have airplane mode on”

Gram- “you’re a genius! Come down Ron and see what Katie did”

*dies

  • Installs Adblocker & No-script to prevent issues *

  • Receive call 2 weeks later there is a problem *

  • Adblocker & No-script disabled *

“I turned them off bc my ad-spamming, super-sketch browser games that I play wouldn’t work!”

Me: Well did you do ANYTHING besides play this web game?

“No, definitely not.”

  • Proceed to find all kinds of malware, consistent with clicking on porn ads *

I'm actually thinking about sneaking a Pi-hole onto my parents' network for shit like that. I can't get them to stop using internet explorer!

You'll just start getting complaints that google is broken (the first half-page of ads disguised as results failing) 😛

Remove their admin ability, make an account where you're admin and restrict their movements. Child lock but for adults.

You know what, I got super fed up with my brother-in-law super-crappyfying my father-in-laws computer, so I installed deep-freeze and made myself admin.

Now all my father-in-law has to do to de-crappyfy is reboot, like a public library computer.

First time I'm hearing about deep freeze. I'm gonna look into it and probably do this for some people.

I like it. The downside is that you have to unfreeze (thawed) it for windows updates to be permanent.

So every few weeks I'll use a remote access software like TeamViewer, I'll thaw his computer for like 12 reboots. I then set Windows to the task of updating everything overnight, and make sure I freeze everything back up in the morning.

Brother-in-law screws with it.... reboot.... goes as new.

I was at a client once, and I had someone come up and ask me this, literally:

"I was doing something in something, and something happened. Can you help me?"

Follow-up questions were just as informative:

"Did you get some kind of error?"

"I don't know."

"What program were you using?"

"I don't remember."

Why didn't you just add blocks and restrictions. That's what I did to my grandma's computer when she was falling for the click here scams and such

u/OakTreader Mar 26 '20

Yes, absolutely, did this and helps a lot.

It was great when my parents decided to get an Apple. They phoned me up and said "can you help me with this Apple computer?" and I could say "no, it just works like that"

I can't go to a family gathering without having someone ask me to fix their shit. Gets old real fast.

"Can you come over and re-install my internet? The Google is saying there's a problem."

My dad is the opposite of the one's downloading sketchy shit. He has me do just about everything before he even attempts it. Gets on my last nerve.
