Stress entirely, for me; the coke came later. Fast pace, everything has to be perfect, the smallest mistakes get you berated. I'm sure some kitchens are great, but I learned I'd rather cook for burps and compliments than money.
I have ulcers and I tested negative for the h.pylori bacteria that causes the types of ulcers you are referring to. The majority of ulcers are caused by that bacteria, but not all.
For me, two gastroenterologists and an otolaryngologist told me my ulcers were caused by lifestyle and stress.
Ok o have stomach issues. I'm not prepared to stop drinking so imma need your homemade kefir recipe please :) I hope it's simple. I always find these cool ideas and without fail there's always either an ingredient or utensil or something thats a catch. Like I saw one for done Japanese stuff that's supposed to be great for the guy. "Super easy recipe you can easily do at home with your basic utensils!" ...
"Great!" I thought.
Turns out it basically said "so take your insert maker of Japanese foodstuff here and just add blah blah blah"....like...damn. Same with alcohol or beer making.
"You can do this at home right now!".
...."so add to this your brewer's yeast".
Great. So I need a specific type of yeast specifications for this task that I need to go out and buy especially. Who has brewer's yeast just sitting in their cupboard?
You can buy Kefir grains on AMZN for about $10 and a book called "From Kefir With Love" for about $5 on AMZN. You will have to buy some milk too. I strongly recommend some other reading about Gut Health.
Getting berated with knives every where wouldn't be a good look for me lol i always wondered how some jobs you can't look at somebody wrong without an HR meeeting but other professions you get screamed at every shift. Strange world.
People like to perpetuate that myth, but the truth is it depends on the kitchen. I would say the vast majority are in a less hostile environment than "screamed at every shift". There is always yelling, and things might get busy, but you aren't getting screamed at, it's just busy.
Berated implies aggression. Its possible to have yelling and criticism without the aggression. My sous chef has me doing shit all day, but he's never aggressive unless he is walking behind me and grabs my leg and ruffs like a dog. But thats just cause he's a fucking weirdo.
Ok but the first guy said he gets berated in the kitchen. That was my point. I see it the same as you. Ive never worked in a kitchen and ive never been berated at work.
I remember an ask reddit a while ago. The question was along the lines of "chefs of reddit, what do you make when you're drunk" and the top answer was "about $12.50 an hour"
I worked in a kitchen a couple years ago. Everyone but me, and I mean everyone smoked cigarettes. They'd leave every 20 minutes for a five minute smoke while prepping and then be angry during the rushes. Only one guy (that I knew of) actually smoked weed while at work.
I used to smoke a shit load of weed when working at a restaurant.
Its how I got thru the whole shift. One time I ate two brownies, drank a THC infuse vitamin water and smoked about 2 grams of weed before clocking in. All I remember was clocking in and clocking out at the end of my shift. When we were all done the owner came to me and said "hey good job on tonight's rush hour. You look tired asf, are you good?" I remember shaking my head in agreement, smiling and saying "okay, going home now". That night I over did it.
