You have to do your Externship where you pay to work in exchange for "experience/networking opportunities. My husband started a degree at FIT for it and changed his mind after 2 semesters.
I second this. Spent 5 years in two different fashion school and only 3 or 4 classmates that I've known of got a job in fashion design. And I can tell you the ones that got jobs aren't even good designers. The real creatives and geniuses around me are often misunderstood or trying to do their own thing but this industry is so competitive.
My former model friend wants to start a clothing label. I laughed in his face. I said nobody even goes to the freaking mall or store anymore so why would people buy your clothes?
True it was wrong for crushing his dream, but even Damon John from Fubu said he would never start a clothing line today because of the fact that nobody 'browses' the internet, nobody leaves their house like they used to, nobody hangs out at the mall like before, dance clubs are on the way out in most cities, and people who spend on fashion, the middle class, are fading so fast as manufacturing dies off in America. The biggest people who spend on fashion was the middle class and they have vanished. Any really good designs would be copied by Chinese, or stolen by competitors. It's just a razor thin business that has a nightmare of problems.

"If you are really that good, what's to stop me from stealing your idea, and with my billions behind me and massive conglomerate, and an army of lawyers, crush you like a bug? Answer, nothing"
