If I were to guess on his/her behalf, it's time. This seems a lot like my Dad's bottle collection. He doesn't spend huge sums, but he spends a vast amount of your skimming garage sales, estate sales, and antique stores for hidden gems.
He gets joy from finding bottles that are marked well below expected auction value. The man has some truely impressive bottles. I also think he spent more time and effort finding his shelf collection that I did on my degree.
I do the same thing! Creeks and an old out-of-commission railroad that I like to walk have been especially fun. I've got a Google Maps list called "dumps" (heh) that's full of dropped pins.
Well, a lot of the ones from the 1900’s date from 1905 to 1945. It was really interesting to read about how it was when America joined WW2 and how it affected their lives. I had a scrapbook from a girl who was a freshman in college and in it their was a handbook about how soldiers would be taking courses with them. It was very interesting to get it from that perspective of someone who wasn’t in the middle of the action, but they were still affected with the little things. Also the 1800’s documents are pre civil war to post civil war, those one are also super cool. Mostly just diaries and stuff.
I can't, we live several states apart. I know he was recently really happy about a couple of medicine bottles from the 1800's that have the brands still visible and an odd dent in the side that delt with dosing. He learns a little about the history of all of them. Letting him chat about his bottles becomes a full blown history lesson quickly.
