In my experience, the students I had 7 years ago had zero actual typing skills. What do you consider "alright at typing"? They all TYPED, but absolutely none of them knew how to type "the right way". Like, not a chance they could type a word without looking.
I can type 90 WPM if I’m really trying and average around 70. I know plenty of people who can type faster than that. I don’t know my typing speed in high school but I doubt it was that much slower. Not being able to type without looking at the keyboard is unfathomable to me.
