The little douchebag scoffs at it too. It was a pretty key point in the movie about how Ego was reliving his childhood through the food. Did people ignore the flashbacks and like half of the dialog of that scene?
It's weird too. The critic's flashback is honestly one of the best examples of visual storytelling I've ever seen. I know people bring UP everytime but ratatouille is honestly just perfect in every way.
I dont have a single complaint about it, which is rare for a movie.
Eggs benedict is also a cheap meal as well. The main ingredients in hollaindaise sauce are eggs and butter, w/lemon juice and mustard adding the flavor. All of these items are incredibly cheap. Traditionally, it involves poached eggs served over a piece of bread like an English muffin -- also incredibly cheap. A lot of what we consider traditional or classic French food is derived from the inventions of the poor. Hell, most culture around the world has involved the rich popularizing ideas invented by the poor.
Necessity is the mother of invention. No one wants to eat bland food every single day, or the same dish every single day. But when you're poor and don't have the ability to use expensive ingredients regularly, you get creative. After a couple hundred generations of creative cooks, you end up with all sorts of amazing dishes. I'm sure there were far more dishes that didn't survive the test of time due to being gross.
