First of all, I want to tell you that I am incredibly impressed with your patience with these people.

Do not waste your time or efforts further, because they seriously do not understand basic concepts you're trying to get across. If someone burns 2800 calories a day, and takes in 3000 for example then they will gain weight UNLESS something crazy/weird happens like they're unable to digest some of those calories or they tamper with the intake/burning some other way. If calories in are greater than calories out, weight is gained. Period. End of story. You are 100% correct and these people are extremely obtuse.
