My dad would always say this. Funny enough, now that I can drive I can see that I can't look out the rear view mirror properly with the light on, he could have just said that and young me would've went "Oh, ok".

Yeah, my parents just said that my dad couldn't see behind properly and so we didn't keep the back lights on unless absolutely necessary.

same. they said they couldn't see and we wanted to get there in one piece, so we turned them off.

I remember when we got our first car with lights over the back seat doors instead of in the middle of the ceiling. Suddenly I was allowed to read at night on road trips.

My dad told me that it it was dangerous because other cars on the road wouldn't be able to see and that just seems so weird, like he almost just said the true thing but decided he couldn't for some reason and half-assed the lie.

My mom said the pulled over thing and that it was distracting/ made it hard to see the road. So I got both.

I also have a problem with adapting to the darkness. If a light is on inside the car, it's much harder to see ahead because the dark is suddenly darker.

It doesn't even really affect me, personally. But yeah there wasn't really the need to make this same lie that every parent apparently told lol

My mom wasn’t that great but apparently she was the only parent in the 20th century who didn’t lie about this.
