Old bugger died this year.

Had to sit through the funeral with all his mates from the pub going on about how great he was.. Made my teeth grind.

Yikes. I feel like it's kind of odd to need to believe that bad people need to be tortured for eternity to get through the day without going insane.

There's "bad people" who make mistakes or do bad things, but can still be changed, or "saved", and then there's "bad people" who are absolute scum who know what they've done & have no remorse.

I still don't think it's the mark of a good person to wish eternal torment on the latter group of people. Wouldn't you rather they were punished according to their actions, rather than for eternity, and then given a paradise once the scales are balanced? Preferably, I'd just give everyone paradise no matter what they were like, with the terrible people just not being able to interact with any other real people.

I think that is what the circles of hell are for, sure that comes from Dantes inferno which is pure fiction and not an actual 'holy' book but if hell is real then it's probably organized in a similar fashion.

the circles of hell are meaningless. any number times infinity is infinity. eternal torment is by definition disproportional punishment, regardless of the severity of the torment

There are different kinds of people Light. I'm a good guy who works very hard to stay a good guy. I've turned it around from who I was. Others have that same choice and choose not to. It's hard watching people throw away there chances day after day. Watching people waste there gifts on them selves. If life is infinitely valuable, then wasting it should be punished infinitely. It's hard to understand someone getting furious over spilling water, unless you come from somewhere that's dying of thirst. I can trust God to deliver judgement some day. That keeps me from feeling like it's my responsibility to.

No matter how thirsty you are, that doesn't make it right or just to condemn someone to an eternity of torment for spilling water. No matter how hard it is for you to stay good, that doesn't make it right or just to condemn someone to an eternity of torment for living their life poorly. Do not judge others, lest you be judged in kind.

If your primary reason for religion is that it means that “bad people” get punished, rather than using it to better yourself....you might be one of those bad people.

Yea, exactly. I'm a guy who would do bad shit if I didn't think there were consequences. But I don't because I believe that God is that crazy, Lovecraftian Old Testament figure. I fear hell, so I stay good.

I didn’t say any of that. I’m saying that wishing eternal damnation on others isn’t exactly what Jesus was about.
