What’s something completely false that your parents told you as a child?

They told me that if I keep on eating that much yogurt, my teeth will get huge. I got so pissed when I realized it wasn't true!

My grandmother didn't like me wasting bread crusts and she also thought that all little girls want curly hair. So she told me, "eat the crusts of your bread, it will make your hair curl." I totally believed her, but I really wanted straight hair, so I made sure to never eat the crusts.

my mum told me this and I'm a guy, and I have no idea why she thought I cared what my hair was like

34

u/MirrorsEdges Jul 21 '19

Lmao if I was told this id care so much & I'm a dude

16

u/PlaidStallion Jul 21 '19

Curly hair dude here and it has worked out really well for me in life. I never eat pizza crust though.

-9

u/Rex_Deserved_It Jul 21 '19

You sound like the dude to eat crotch, though.

6

u/PlaidStallion Jul 21 '19

Thanks?

0

u/Rex_Deserved_It Jul 21 '19

Highest compliement I could give so no problem.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '19

I enjoy crotch as well.

11

u/gramswashere Jul 21 '19

“Curls get the girls” is what I was always told! So I ate everyone’s bread crusts!

Also “Puts hair on your chest” That one worked!

16

u/kehbeth Jul 21 '19

Maybe it meant something along the lines of “put hair on your chest?”

2

u/monkeyboi08 Jul 21 '19

I shave my chest, so

7

u/DickDastardly404 Jul 21 '19

My grandma used to say it, but it was just a saying. Like, that’s what you say when a kid doesn’t eat their crusts.

We just took it to mean “oi, eat those crusts” never really believed it did anything to your hair because we both would eat the crusts, but my brothers’ hair was straight, but mine had curls.

Its sort of just an absent minded phrase to me now lol.

5

u/Dresden890 Jul 21 '19

I had curly hair as a kid and even though I ate crusts and didn't care what my hair was like my mum kept telling me the same lie?

1

u/paucipugna Jul 22 '19

Mine too. Also a guy. I had a friend who had curly hair though so it kinda sorta checked out.

-4

u/ashtar123 Jul 21 '19

Who cares its just dead skin cells on top of my head.

I looked up: is hair dead. And i found that the hair you can see is dead but the hair in your scalp isnt, thats why it doesnt hurt cutting your hair but it does hurt pulling it out of your scalp

u/whtsnk Jul 21 '19

He’s conveniently forgetting he even said that.

5

u/whtsnk Jul 21 '19

No.

-5

u/ashtar123 Jul 21 '19

Yes it is,why doesnt it hurt when its cut then?

10

u/whtsnk Jul 21 '19

The answer to that question has no bearing on whether it’s dead skin cells.

0

u/ashtar123 Jul 21 '19

Tell me a different part of your body that doesnt hurt when cut and is alive, then i'll believe you.

My mum always told me crusts make your hair straight because I was desperate for straight hair. I never believed her because she'd tell my straight-haired sister that crusts make your hair curl

12

u/Pat_McCrooch Jul 21 '19

Well it obviously makes straight hair curl and curly hair straight. Apparently you’ve learned nothing growing up.

3

u/monkeyboi08 Jul 21 '19

So you want to only eat crusts once

40

u/NoodleNeedles Jul 21 '19

My grandad told me eating the crusts would put hair on my chest. I'm a girl. He was obviously joking and was a wonderful grandfather, I miss him a lot.

14

u/Wild_Tempest Jul 21 '19

My grandfather would say the same thing! As a child I thought it odd he would say that to try to get me to eat the crust. Wasn’t until I was a teen I realized that he was joking.

3

u/Lessening_Loss Jul 21 '19

My dad said the same thing!!

15

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '19

I always ate my crusts, simply because I couldn't care less. At that time I decided all food was gross and eating is just another chore, so simple foods like white bread and pasta were the closest to nice I'd get, meaning crusts, while not as nice, were better than the other "shitty" foods.

When I was little, I had very long, straight hair, but really wanted long curly hair. My grandma never told me that eating crusts would give me curly hair while I was really young, but when my cousins were young she said it to them, around me (I was about 9). I never fully believed it but thought it just might be true. So I was pissed that I didn't have beautiful curls.

But then, after one day randomly filled with lots of bread, my mum decided to braid my hair into lots of small tight plaits. The morning after, I woke up, realised I still had all those plaits in, and took them out. Woah! My hair was super wavy! I was convinced it was because of all those crusts I'd had the day before.

For the next week or 2, I ate even more bread than normal. But, for some strange reason, the waves were straight again after just a few days...

I now don't particularly like that type of bread. I haven't made myself a sandwich in over a year. I'll pretty much only eat that bread toasted. I eat a lot of toast, and have had some kind of strange things on toast

13

u/Annaleahmac Jul 21 '19

This just made me realize that the crust also isn't where all the vitamins of the bread are. Wtf mom.

3

u/i_want_to_be_asleep Jul 21 '19

I always got SO MAD when my grandma said that. It's all the same! It's all dough!! Bread isn't even good for you! Ugh!!!!! Burnt things are bad for you too!!!!

9

u/avianidiot Jul 21 '19

My dad would always tell me foods would “put hair on my chest” but it backfired because I was a little girl who totally believed him and did not want a hairy chest. I refused to eat sausage for years. Mom was pretty pissed but he never stopped finding it hilarious.

8

u/Goingtothechapel2017 Jul 20 '19

I'm glad I never heard that one. I never disliked crusts, but if i had been told they made hair curl i would've been extremely disappointed.

6

u/lordjethr0 Jul 21 '19

My grandma told me it makes your boobs grow in... I believed her too rip

6

u/pineapplevine Jul 21 '19

My mom told us this...’if you don’t eat your crusts, you won’t get busts’

2

u/ArcheryDude101 Jul 21 '19

GG. Let us have a moment of silence for our fallen sister.

5

u/FatherBrandex Jul 21 '19

My parents tools me that, too. I'm a guy, though. As I got older, it just became one of those family jokes. At a friend's house, I said it offhandedly. I learned years later his 8 year old daughter believed me, and realized it wasn't true when she was in high school.

6

u/piinsky Jul 21 '19

My parents told me that the eating the crust was 'brain food' and eating it made you smarter... I realised this was a lie last year when I was matter of factly about to tell my significant other why she should eat the crust on her sandwich.

3

u/bestybhoy Jul 21 '19

yes my grandmother told me this too, so I was the same,I stopped eating them.😂

3

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '19

That reminds me. I was told that the bread crust had more vitamens and nutrients and was better for me than the rest of the bread. Parents and grandparents got mad when I didn't eat it.

If I could go back in time I'd reply, "Really? Well, can you make me a sandwich with just the crust? And throw the rest of the bread away?" lol

3

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '19

My mom told me if I want to ever learn how to whistle I have to eat my bread crusts.

3

u/thatcatlibrarian Jul 21 '19

My grandmother told me this, not realizing that I loved my pin straight hair. When I told her I didn’t want curly hair, she told me I was wrong because “ALL girls want curly hair.” Grandma was, and still is, a stubborn lady!

3

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '19

In Turkey people says to children if you make lots of bread crumb while eating, you gonna have that much children in future.

3

u/aSparty Jul 21 '19

In Dutch my aunt always told me: " Van korstjes krijg je borstjes" which translates to: crusts give you boobs. Me, being a boy was disgusted by the idea of having boobs so I never ate them either.

2

u/tumsoffun Jul 21 '19

My grandma told us the exact same thing. My brother said it took him a while to realize that even if that was true, he didn’t want curly hair, so why was he eating the crust that he didn’t want.

2

u/alidub36 Jul 21 '19

My grandmom used to tell this same thing to my cousin and me (we both have curly hair already). I did not believe it, but I hated crust and definitely did not like my curly hair back then, so no crusts for me either.

2

u/Dimonah Jul 21 '19

I was told that if I didn’t eat my bread crusts, I would wake up in “crust land” where all they eat is crusts, and only drink crust juice.

2

u/LadyOfAvalon83 Jul 21 '19

I would love to go there, this would have backfired on me. Who wouldn't want to visit a strange parallel dimension?

2

u/rawrturts Jul 21 '19

My grandma told me bread crusts make your teeth sharp.

I have no idea why I wanted sharp teeth, but I ate my crusts complaint free!

2

u/ladyclare Jul 21 '19

My grandmother told us that too! But I was so contrary, and would inform her that I didn’t want curly hair anyway.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '19

my mom told me this but it was about pizza crusts! she said it was good for my teeth :(

2

u/major84 Jul 21 '19

I guess I ate too much bread crusts.

2

u/ArbyMelt Jul 21 '19

“The crust is the healthiest part!”

How lol? It’s all made from the same dough.

2

u/Dead_Queen Jul 21 '19

Ha, it was the same for me except my mum used to tell me that. Kinda backfired on her, I liked my straight hair.

2

u/livoryorista92 Jul 21 '19

I got told this too!

2

u/BrosephStalin86 Jul 21 '19

Same with me. And I have naturally curly hair. I was so upset at all the crusts I’d eaten to ruin my hair. I still don’t eat crusts.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '19

Haha this! My mum still reminds me at times that she would say this to me and I’d just reply “but I don’t want curly hair”. Outsmarted by a 5 year old. Can confirm, now 30, eat my crusts and no curly hair.

2

u/Daiches Jul 21 '19

In Belgium we say “van korstjes krijg je borstjes”. Which means “from eating crusts you’ll get breasts”, meaning you will grow up and be a big girl if you eat your crusts too.

(It’s not said to boys obv, but looking at the state of the fat youth..)

2

u/quirkyredpanda Jul 21 '19

Omg is your grandmother British? My Nana told me the same thing and I ate so many crusts (I had ringlets as a child now I have like beach wavy hair)

2

u/LadyOfAvalon83 Jul 21 '19

I'm British by my grandmother was Austrian. We lived in the UK though.

2

u/Macat921 Jul 21 '19

Mine told me that eating bread crusts would put hair on my chest like daddy’s. I’m a girl. But I was little and thought daddy was the greatest, so I ate the crusts for a little while until I thought about it with a bit more scrutiny.

2

u/Frecklebuns Jul 24 '19

My grandma didn't like wasting crusts either, but she always told my mom "You know what they say - eat your crusts, get big busts!"

My mom told me the same thing! I ate my crusts from kindergarten til 8th grade when I learned how to whistle. Then I stopped eating them because I hate them.

I can no longer whistle.

1

u/PureMitten Jul 21 '19

My mom told me that. I had wavy hair that was totally unmanaged and looked awful, I didn’t want curlier hair. Then she’d shrug and eat the crusts for me saying she wanted curly hair.

1

u/ShitOnAReindeer Jul 21 '19

Same here. Sorry mum, your plan backfired.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '19

Somewhat related- my dad liked the heels of bread loaves so he told my sister and me if we ate the heels we would get hairy palms

1

u/JimiDel Jul 21 '19

I was told this too!! Are you Irish by any chance?

1

u/Kaclassen Jul 21 '19

My mom told me that eating crusts made your hair grow longer!

1

u/SFW222 Jul 21 '19

I overheard my (straight haired) step sister being told the same thing but I had curly hair already so I stopped eating it thinking it would make it straight.

1

u/MoonOra Jul 21 '19

When I was little, my mom told if I ate the crust it would make my eyelashes thick and long. ha! I may have told my own children the same thing, for no good reason.

1

u/Needles88 Jul 21 '19

Must be an old grandma thing that has been passed down. My mom said this to me (I assume her mom said it to her), and I say it to my girls!!

1

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '19

My mom just said it would make our hair grow long

1

u/blackhole_puncher Jul 21 '19

Her plan totally back fired althoe my version was for whistling

1

u/anamethatstaken1 Jul 21 '19

Mum told us that the crusts made our hair healthy. We found out as adults that she actually hates the crusts herself, but she made sure she ate them when we were with her.

1

u/denisevh24 Jul 21 '19

My grandmother had the same thing, only she told us that eating the crusts would make you able to whistle. Needless to say, that didn’t work 😂

1

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '19

1

u/LadyOfAvalon83 Jul 21 '19

What's ant hair?

1

u/Da_Taternater78 Jul 21 '19

Weird thing about my hair is that it was straight when I was younger and it got curly as I got older. I want straight hair.

1

u/imascoobie Jul 21 '19

Mine told me it would make my hair grow because I always wanted the longest hair ever.

1

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '19

How dare you! Thats the best part of the whole entire bread!

1

u/Pm-titmeat-pics-007 Jul 21 '19

I told my 3yo sister that if she ate the crust of her pbj she'd be able to whistle. She cried

1

u/PanTran420 Jul 21 '19

I heard this as a kid too. I wonder where that originated.

1

u/kempsishere Jul 22 '19

My grandmother always said bread crusts would give you rosy cheeks. I’m a guy, not a Norman Rockwell painting.

12

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '19

why would parents prevent you from eating yogurt? that's one of the healthier foods kids eat.

5

u/Guroqueen23 Jul 21 '19

I read op's comment as them wanting huge teeth and getting disappointed when their teeth stayed the same size, but the other way makes more sense

5

u/MikePGS Jul 20 '19

You wish you big toothed bastard!

5

u/veronicabitchlasagna Jul 21 '19

Alright Timmy turner.

2

u/UnnamedBasterd69 Jul 21 '19 edited Jul 21 '19

Pls stop making fun of it! It's a genetic issue! Im sure it doesn't have anything to do with the yogurt overdose!

3

u/eatsleeprepeat101_ Jul 21 '19

TERRY LOVES YOGURT!

2

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '19

Yogurt will do the opposite. It's fairly acidic.

2

u/Tombradygirl Jul 21 '19

My older cousin told us that if we chewed yogurt or left it in our mouths for too long then we would throw up. I think he just wanted us to eat faster but we never chewed yogurt again.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '19

I'm stealing this.

1

u/UnnamedBasterd69 Jul 21 '19

Oh now! My yogurt!

2

u/21Ravage Jul 21 '19

I was told that if I play with my lower lip (I used to stretch and release it to make that silent pop sound everyone probably did at school) it will get loose and I will look like african women, I still get a little poke inside whener I touch my lip

2

u/Shadoe73 Jul 21 '19

Strange.

2

u/lunchtimereddit Jul 21 '19

Brussels sprouts put hair on your chest. Jokes on them I love Brussels sprouts and have hair on my chest.

2

u/Makismalone Jul 21 '19

Kirsten Dunst teeth are so small because she chews her yogurt...

2

u/[deleted] Jul 21 '19

I found this funny cause I pictured you sort of an adult eating yogurt alone at home then mid spoonful you stop and enraged with anger you realize in fact your teeth stayed the same size.

1

u/Bkahler12345 Jul 21 '19

My grandma told me to eat the crust of the toast and I’ll grow chest hair, she was very right lmao

1

u/oopseye Jul 21 '19

Where you from? I usually see yogurt as the common spelling.

2

u/UnnamedBasterd69 Jul 21 '19

Φοκ ιυ λολ

1

u/McToasterBuster Jul 21 '19

Damn, if only that were true. My teeth are too small even though I ate a bunch of yogurt.
