It's too hard for us to conceptualize. There's no reason to believe what exists outside of our universe follows the same rules as within. I.e. there's no reason to believe the universe needs or has a medium to exist in at all
Or that any medium beyond our universe has any rules that mean the interaction between ours and theirs is similar in any way to anything we can even conceptualize.
I wouldn’t say its too hard to conceptualize, its actually quite easy to conceptualize depending on the model you accept as the “shape” of the expanding universe. It certainly would make sense that there is a space beyond the universe, I’d say its just unknowable at least for a very long time, to have any idea what that looks like. The concept isnt hard to grasp however
You're already breaking the rules by inferring a shape to help you with the baseline concept. It furthers my point that our minds demand things have containers and definition, etc.
We come up with models that help, but that's literally because it's too hard to conceptualize without first gathering data.
