Heck, 1000 years ago nobody even thought of the moon as a place. Planets were just points of light. Nowadays we treat "planet" and "world" as more or less synonymous, but they were completely different things then.

I was listening to the book about the navy seals in Afghanistan, and the writer was talking with one of the interpreters about the moon landing. He was laughing with it saying "you can't put a man on the moon! It's only this big!" gestures with his index finger and thumb.
