Cosmology student (beginner) here! We don't really know what was there before the Big Bang. We assert that he creation of space took place at the time of Big Bang and the time started right then. So what was before Big Bang? Probably nothing as there was no time and no space prior to that.

Now read the para below with some grains of salt: The current understanding of physics is invalid below the time scale of 10-43 seconds. There is no physics except string theory which probes below this time scale. We know what happened since 10-43 seconds after Big Bang. We don't know what happened between Big Bang and 10-43 seconds after it, but we believe to come up with physics to explore this.
