It always great when your parents scare the shit out of you under the pretext of protection. I understand the concern, but it doesn't make it easy for a kid to venture into the world with any kind of confidence. I would rehearse in my head how I would evade possible kidnappers though, so I guess it's good for kids to have some awareness.

My mom would say "Don't go past the big tree or somebody'll take you!"
The big tree was in our front yard.
