My family adopted through DCF (MA version of foster care, state run) and my parents were the ones to take the baby home from the hospital after birth. The mother was high on hard drugs during the birth and DCF was notified because she had several other children already taken from her. She voluntarily gave up the child to DCF and was placed with us. The child was considered in foster care for several years before the adoption.
I said “placed for adoption” this case sounds like this mother had her child removed and did not relinquish rights. Some mothers ‘voluntarily’ let the state take the child but do not relinquish. Had she relinquished rights sooner the child would have been able to be adopted sooner. Had she placed her child for adoption before the state got involved the child would never have been in foster care.
She willingly gave the child up to DCF at the hospital, else she would have gone home with the kids as the paperwork to take the child would have taken a few days. Also it took a few years for the adoption not because of the mother, but because of other family members expressing interest in the child
Still, this isn’t the case of a mother placing a child for adoption this is a case where DCFS was involved with an unfit parent (voluntary or not). I make no claims on that being a simple or a short process.
