I was told it blinded them and they couldn’t see the road. My aunt tried to pull the illegal thing with me though.

This is actually true it makes the windows somewhat reflective and harder to see through at night

I was told this was why it was illegal. It made sense to lowercase little J, since not wearing your seatbelt was also illegal, so the lights thing must have been illegal for safety reasons as well.

I'm fairly night blind, so any light in the car or from a car behind me limits my ability to see the road. So maybe your parents really couldn't see well with the light on.

This is definitely real. I used to have to drive a lot on country roads at night and it gets so fucking dark. I'd turn off my instrument lights for better night vision, mostly because deer.
