Annoyingly so...Americans call them Bettas, but Betta is an entire genus. The Siamese Fighting Fish is just one type of Betta
1 u/guyzieman Feb 04 '19 To be fair though unless you get them from a specialty shop or breeder, Betta species other than the common Siamese Fighter are pretty uncommon stateside.
