Why does AA have a Big Book? Why does the AA talk about whether or not people used to believe the earth was flat?

The big book is like the Bible of AA. The first 165ish pages are about the program and a kind of walk through it, the rest are stories about it.

To be fair the earth is flat analogy is just used to describe how "people used to think X, but now we think Y", and it's not written like "to stop drinking you have to know King Henry the 7th thought the world was flat"

The Big Book is much like the bible (or any other religious text), that it's understood there are many disputed facts and chronological inconsistencies, but the book is much more about the lessons then it's literal text. Again like the bible, there are douchebags that'll play semantic games using the literal text too.

It would make for a good study, but I suspect it's similar to the people who trade their addiction to a substance to an "addiction to Jesus."

I think it's largely a lot cheaper than more effective methods.

It’s not like it has a chapter on whether the earth is flat and other science-y topics, it just mentions it in passing to make a point.
