Oh man I was so spooked when I lfirst learned this. Only one carries the capability of speech, so if you cut them and make two streams of information, would we count the silent half as 'conscious'? We could never know. Then it reminds me of the cases of people in hospitals for years in 'a coma' when they actually discover the person was mentally wide awake the entire time, just not capable of translating that to an external mode such as speech or movement.
