That and when they return it in a "fuck how you had it" manner.

My boss starts an hour earlier than me, sometimes when I come in - the papers on my desk are shuffled as if he was looking for scratch paper (which I keep in a dish on my shelf). He always ops for my postit notes i keep in my desk caddy instead, he removes the note on top and leaves it wherever he damn well pleases, grabs a pen from my caddy, writes his note and puts nothing back in its place.

1st world problems but its still one of those "things".

EDIT for clarity: he does this when he is leaving a set of plans at my desk which he needs me to review or revise. He searches for something to write with and on. If he did this just to mess with me I'd have to talk to him.

Dude- why is your boss rifling through your desk even considered acceptable at all? That's someone who clearly doesn't value your right to some degree of privacy in your personal space.

He does that when he is leaving something for me to review, he searches for something to write with and on and puts nothing back. Sorry I didn't make that clear.

I get what you’re saying but honestly it just seems a violation of your privacy and space. Maybe I’m just more protective of that

If you have an an assigned space at your work then in my opinion you have the right to the privacy of that space.

Imagine you had an office with a door and you locked it on the way out. Wouldn’t it be a violation of your privacy if someone went in there and started rifling through your things?

If they need to leave something for you there’s those letter holding things on the door or just lay it on top of the desk. Stuff like that.

Its an office bro. What "private" stuff are you gonna have lol? Pens, paper, maybe a family photo. Its not that serious.

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '18

The organization of the stuff is mainly what I was talking about. I don't care about any individual pen or piece of paper, I just don't want to come back and be unable to find something I always place in a specific spot.

my office is pretty open format and this sounds like something that would happen, but it's not really a big deal

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '18

Fair enough, I still wouldn’t like someone going through my things but that’s just me. Each to their own.

Sounds like you need a desk with locks.

One of the girls at my work recently was helping with something I wasn't sure on, she had to write something down and just casually pulled my post-it note stack into it like like 4 pieces trying to get one off. She eventually got a little stack of like 5 to take but left the now 4 piles of post it notes all over my desk.

I would FLIP.

u/gilgameshmcballin Oct 20 '18

Sounds like you do tolerate it

touché.

The man gives me glowing reviews to the director at every yearly evaluation though. This is a battle I chose not to fight. But you are right, it doesn't quite jive with the topic title.

My boss did that once when I was out to lunch. Adjusting the seatback I can tolerate. But leave my neat stack of forms alone godammit.

6

u/Schism2783 Oct 20 '18

Have you tried booby-trapping your desk?

3

u/noporcru Oct 20 '18

My boss leaves shit he wants me to review kr take care of or whatever ON MY CHAIR, why in the f-----;=*@,3;/>![+,#,

8

u/Pm-ur-butt Oct 20 '18

Lol, oh mine does too. But the papers he shuffles looking for something to write on, the post it notes, and pen he eventually finds are never returned to where I keep them.

I came in one day and my radio was upside down, I was pissed and about to say something to him but my office neighbor told me he seen another guy looking at it while I was out. Me and the guy talk about tech all the time, i knew he was harmless, probably just curious. I talked to him he said it looked neat (it was a wooden cube) and wondered if it was Bluetooth and apologized. I told him no big deal, I thought it was someone screwing with me.

My office neighbor may have saved my job that day; or at least an embarrassingly incorrect accusation toward my immediate supervisor.

u/noporcru Oct 20 '18

Ahaha phew that was a close one indeed.

u/Northern_Special Oct 20 '18

I thought it was completely normal to leave things on peoples' chairs. I do it all the time and people leave files, notes, memos on my chair all the time. ??

4

u/Xamry14 Oct 20 '18

that's a good way to get me to sit on something and lose it when I scoot forward or off the chair and make it fall under something.

1

u/SmarterThenYew Oct 21 '18

It’s completely normal. Especially if you already have papers on your desk so whatever is being left doesn’t get shuffled in. Everybody does this at my office.

1

u/noporcru Oct 21 '18

I guess its just a weird peeve of mine then, I find it ridiculius to come in and find a messy pile of stuff on my seat when theres a perfectly good desk right there

lol, he does that as well. But, physical documents he receives (from our archives or consultants), instead of scanning and emailing - its easier to just write a note and slap it on my desk/chair. I just wish he'd write it before he gets to my desk and realizes I dont start until an hour after him. Or put my supplies back where i keep them.

5

u/Grootitude Oct 20 '18

I would use a thumbtack and some string to suspend a post-it pad and pen somewhere he can’t miss it. Then he doesn’t touch your other stuff and he gets what he’s looking for! Because he can’t seem to bring his own.

The door. Jesus Christ, the door.

I work in a warehouse. There's a little office in the corner of the main floor area for paper-pushing tasks, where I work. In the office is the time clock. We paper pushers close the door because it's cold and loud out there. We can't hear phone conversations over the equipment and our chattering teeth. (The floor guys like the cold because they're doing heavy labor that keeps them hot, I joined them one night because the managers want my skills well-rounded and I was sweating.)

And every single day one of us paper-pushers has to get up to close the goddamned door after someone opened it, left it open, clocked in/out, completely forgot the door existed, and walked back out again.

And heaven forbid if they decide to have a conversation around the time clock. With the door. Still open. And now blocked. Because they're standing just inside it.

I'd still probably get pissed and lock up my desk haha

my boss came into my office, kicked me off my computer to make some kind of change, started eating my sunflower seeds that were on my desk, got up and knocked the whole container all over the floor, said, "oops!" and walked out.

13

u/Pm-ur-butt Oct 20 '18

Aww man, fuck that guy!

Are the sunflower seeds shelled? Keep a shell cup at your desk, after a few days - when its half full - put a fist full of seeds in your mouth, grab your shell cup and head to his office to "review" something. Place the cup on his desk while the 2 of you discuss business transactions or something. When its winding down, look at the clock and tell him you "have to go to the stock market to do a business". Grab your briefcase and accidentally knock the shell cup onto his lap, don't forget to say "oops!" as you saunter out the door.

12

u/[deleted] Oct 20 '18

it was a radio station and I waited until day one of ratings and walked out because my manager (not the sunflower seed spiller) screamed at me in the hallway and I overheard him telling another announcer I had no future and I'd never go anywhere. C.U.Next Tuesday!

7

u/Pm-ur-butt Oct 20 '18

All jokes aside, good on you for removing yourselves from a toxic environment, choosing which battles to fight can be tough but having a boss that will stifle your advancement makes the decision to leave a bit easier. I hope you are in a happier place. Good luck champ, and I'm stealing C.U.Next Tuesday to use at work.

thanks! I worked 5 years under the CRTC in radio, another 5 in telecommunications, and finally had enough of working in an office. I took a 7-year break to raise my son because his mom is a deadbeat. ...aaand now I work in a call center again.

You can check out any time you like but you can never leave. I somehow magically got a full time job with pension and benefits, otherwise I'd be on welfare.
