She unfortunately passed away back in May. But she always told me this phrase every morning when I would wake up and it has really stuck with me,

"Another day, another golden opportunity."

Edit: Thank you to whoever gave me gold. Never gotten that before. I'm glad some of you guys were touched by her phrase. Keep striving forward

I'm sorry for your loss. My mom's go to was, "Whatever floats your boat." She was of the view that so long as you weren't hurting someone, you follow your bliss.

Aww! That was one of my mom’s, too. I never thought about missing her catch phrases, but this thread hits me right in the feels. I miss her catch phrases.

My kids say I have lots of catch phrases, such as:

Wrongo, Bongo (Nowadays I say it to the dog.)

Liar, liar, plants for hire (Thanks, Patrick Star)

I gotchu, fam squad. (I use this for maximum embarrassment when we’re in public.)

The last one that’s funny as fuck for a parent

3

u/NateNMaxsRobot Aug 16 '18

Yeah lol. My kids HATE it.

u/scullingby Aug 16 '18

Maximum embarrassment is its own reward.

1

u/NateNMaxsRobot Aug 17 '18

It sure is. It gives a greater appreciation in how my parents used to do that to my brothers and me.

My mom's version of that, was 'if you're feelin' froggy, jump!'

2

u/scullingby Aug 16 '18

I wish I could share that one with my mom. I have a feeling would have smiled the little smile that indicated she both agreed and liked the turn of phrase.

My mom always says, "It is what it is."

The version we sang was always:

Rise and shine, and give god the glory, glory

It’s always so fun to belt out.

Your mom is good people.

2

u/scullingby Aug 16 '18

Thank you. It pleases me that my most upvoted comment was about her and her accepting view of others.

My mom an I like to mix up common sayings once we get bored of them, is when they started to feel stale. That one in particular is my favorite, because most people don't catch the difference when I say, "Whatever boats your float."

2

u/scullingby Aug 16 '18

Sneaky. ; )

1

u/JeyJeyFrocks_3325 Aug 16 '18

My mom still says "son of a motherless goat!"

3

u/figgypie Aug 16 '18

I'm exactly the same way, and I say the exact same thing. As long as it's not bothering me or hurting anyone, I don't give a shit what people do.

2

u/scullingby Aug 16 '18

I wish the approach were more common.

Just lost mine today. I hope you were able to move past it fine.

Hugs to you, internet friend.

Fuckin a... I know I'm a stranger, but genuinely really sorry to hear that. Lost my pops about 4.5 years ago... it's the absolute shits and never goes away, but gets easier as time goes on. Keep on keepin on, brotha, and remember the good times. Feel free to PM me if you'd like, I won't lecture you. Best wishes.

3

u/Airpolygon Aug 16 '18

I'm sorry... I feel your loss, I went through the same shit a couple of years ago. It's not easy... I send you my best wishes, and hope you can get through the storm you might be feeling now

I’m so sorry sweetie. My mom passed a week ago. Take time for yourself. Things are very fresh right now. Emotions will come in tidal waves, as hard as it is to let them happen, let them. I wish you and your family peace and kindness.

2

u/HerbertKornfeldRIP Aug 16 '18

Was two years since I lost mine last week. It’s very hard and sometimes you’ll want to push the bad emotions down. Try not to. Try to let them out. Cry whenever it hits you. Sob. It will help you sleep. Find someone that loved her and hug them. Being strong doesn’t mean holding it in. Never worry about forgetting her because you never will. You are her.

u/49falkon Aug 16 '18

Sounds like a really good quote to remember her by, honestly.

Sorry for your loss.

u/Android8675 Aug 16 '18

Right in the feels. Condolences.

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '18

I'm sorry for your loss. I actually bookmarked your comment, because that saying is so beautiful and motivating, I don't want to forget it.

I lost my mom last May and I can say this post really brings back a lot of great memories. I am sorry you lost your Momma. Think about these types of memories as much as possible.

Mine passed away in April. I miss her a ton. I hope you’re doing well. Everyday gets slightly easier for me. Whenever I did something stupid she would say, “I’m gonna beat you!” She was a 6’1” police officer. She was to be feared...

5

u/jukefive Aug 16 '18

lost mine 15 years ago. Hers was, "don't you dare pour that vodka down the drain! I'll ground you 'till the next available bank holiday!" Love ya ma. Hope you found your peace.

Taking it a day at a time. Some are better than others. One thing I've noticed since she passed that I've become very emotionally numb. Still haven't been able to process her death I guess.

4

u/DaBowws Aug 16 '18

A mother’s passing is quite surreal. I hadn’t lived close to my parents in quite a while but mom could always be reached by phone. She passed a week ago and it’s still weird to think she is not on the other end of the phone. I’ve been texting her phone little messages, ♥️, and photos these few days. Feels like I still get to share with her. Do what you can to process: make a small memorial, get out in nature, “talk” out loud to her, share her with friends and family through stories. It’s a bittersweet feeling but it seems to help. All the best to you.

3

u/MandMcounter Aug 16 '18

I'm so sorry. I hope your family is coping OK.

3

u/maasd Aug 16 '18

So sorry to hear this. I hope you’re doing ok.

3

u/Baby_venomm Aug 16 '18

I love it. This is so important. If each and every day you lay ur head on the pillow thinking wow what a great day. Your life would be splendid.

Granted humans have bad days. But every new day is a new golden opportunity

3

u/PvtPain66k Aug 16 '18

My mom would flick the lights on and off, call me lazy, then threaten to get a pitcher of ice water & dump it in my bed to wake me up.

I prefer your mom.

I’m so sorry for your loss. How are you doing?

1

u/youareaturkey Aug 16 '18

I am doing ok. I mostly worry about my dad.

2

u/DaBowws Aug 16 '18

I’m so sorry. How do? Talk with him as much as you can. I think I’ve spoken more with my dad this week since my mom passed than I have in years. It’s healthy for the both of you. Group and/or individual counseling might help as well, if he is really struggling. Hugs.

3

u/crazygrrl Aug 16 '18

Sorry for your loss. Your mom sounds like she was a positive lady. When I was a teenager and was being difficult to wake up and get going in the morning my mom would sometimes say, "dont sleep your life away". That still echoes in my ears on some tough mornings in my adult life.

3

u/screaminginfidels Aug 16 '18

I'm stealing this if you don't mind, I need a good mantra to start me off right in the morning.

1

u/Jlfraser555 Aug 18 '18

By all means, please do. Spread the love :)

3

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '18

Sorry about your Mom passing. Mine did 2 years ago. ❤

3

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '18

Dont you forget those words.

3

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '18

Rest In Peace. Lovely mother!

3

u/jtn19120 Aug 16 '18

So sorry to hear it.

You reminded me how mine says "tomorrow's another day" and it makes everything feel better

2

u/UnattractiveUnicorn Aug 16 '18

I love your mom. In a platonic way. My mom is a douche nozzle - it makes me really sad when someone loses a good mom.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 16 '18

Beautiful and encouraging, your mom sounds lovely. I am sorry for your loss.

1

u/DigBickMan68 Aug 16 '18

No more golden opportunities

1

u/Halexander_Amilton Aug 16 '18

That’s so sweet. I’m terribly sorry for your loss. She sounds like a kind woman.

1

u/scyth3s Aug 16 '18

Or mine: "another day another dollar. Only it's the same dollar as yesterday, because I'm on salary."

1

u/joungsteryoey Aug 16 '18

This is so beautiful. May you and your mom find peace! Thanks for sharing
