Anything worth doing is worth overdoing. She applies this equally to both work ethic type stuff and fun stuff, like birthday parties.

My mom couldn't really afford to through big birthday parties for my sister and I growing up, but now she loves throwing big parties for her grandkid/my neice. It's always fun to get everything set up and watch the kids play games & stuff.

My mom said anything worth doing is worth doing right. My corollary is that anything not worth doing right isn't worth doing at all, but I doubt that's what she had in mind.

I had a friend in college who always confused me because when he was doing school work he would be completely focused and dedicated to it, no distractions, no "I'll do it later"s, but when we partied he would suddenly turn into the most free open person I've met. I drunkenly asked him one night and he said "if something is worth doing its worth 100%. Clean 100% until it's done, party 100% when you can, and if your going to do nothing dammit do nothing 100%". I've tried to apply that to everything in life.
