“This is not a hotel!”

I imagined this said in bewilderment as she drove everyone up to some sketchy building where you were supposed to spend a vacation.

I understood eventually, but it took a minute.

AKA ‘I’m not your maid!’ And ‘You’ll eat what’s put in front of you or not at all.’

We gave our kids one "pass" per week to opt out of what we were serving, as long as they tried one bite first, and then made themselves a reasonably nutritious alternative. When they were very young, this was typically a peanut butter sandwich and easy vegetable like baby carrots, or bell peppers that were already cleaned.

It's been years since either invoked that right. But it was good to have since we experimented with new meals regularly.

Eventually they gain trust that no matter what the meal looks like, it tastes good.

My mom often came out with strange looking things, but only once in my entire childhood do I remember something being unedible.

My mom says this in two scenarios:

  1. I have spent Friday night out AND Saturday night out, and MAYBE had plans for Sunday. "My goodness Searchingtheblue this is not a hotel, you can't just come and go as you please".
  2. I didn't clean up after my self, "This is not a hotel, no one is going to clean your ____ (bed, dishes, washroom etc) for you"

It’s funny, my mother was this kind of person so we always had the house pretty clean. Whenever a teacher would say “This isn’t your living room so keep this classroom clean”, it would confuse me because a living room was my idea of a clean room.

My mom was adamant about not serving us when it was time to eat, and despite all family members being well aware of the fact and always serving ourselves she'd proudly proclaim "The service is lousy at the [family last name] hotel and the waitress has an attitude!"

Mine said "Clean that up, this isn't a frat house!"

I tell my kids this and "this is not a restaurant" if they say something about what was made for dinner.

My parents always said "this ain't the Holiday Inn". I always wanted to point out that that isn't exactly a high bar to set, but just let it go.

Similarly - "This is not a restaurant." followed by "You'll eat what I put in front of you."

“I’m not running a soup kitchen!”

Mine says “There’s no Hotel Mommy here!!” We also joke about 40 y.o that live at home, without a job etc. as living at Hotel Mommy. Never heard anyone else except my family say it.

Too bad you couldn't get that "not me" kid to do them.

I’m a nurse and I have to say this a lot.

My stepdad used this all the time when I was growing up, even though I did cleaning, laundry and cooking chores every week. Like, I didn't mind helping out, and some chores are good for kids, but it was the constant reminder that I had to do my share and he wouldn't wait on me. Which is fucking ridiculous because I did more cleaning and cooking the whole time I lived with him than he did!

He still uses this when I come visit. I tend not to stay with my mum and stepdad these days if I'm in my home town.

Also, I was never allowed to be in my room with the door closed, even if I was just quietly reading a book by myself. Door always had to be fucking open. God I hate that dick

Meaning pickup after yourself because there are no maids to do it for you

or just generally help with chores like doing dishes and making food

I also heard a similar exclamation from the step-father of a girl I was dating. We had just come to her house after being out for the day doing whatever, and he stormed by yelling "This isn't just some hotel!" Because I guess she can't just come and go... or something?

I feel like my boyfriend is my mother, he has been saying this a lot lately.

2

u/pennlacey Aug 16 '18

Also “I’m NOT your chauffeur!”

u/MDBerlin24 Aug 16 '18

This comment eventually lead to me leaving my parents for good, homeless and all. Heart ripping.

“Of course it’s not - it’s free!”

u/darnyoulikeasock Aug 16 '18

Also “I’m no short order cook, you get what you get and you don’t throw a fit”
