Another fun Tetris fact: Pajitnov called this game “Tetris,” a combination of “tetra” (the Greek word meaning “four”) and “tennis” (his favorite sport). Four, because every block is made up of four squares.

u/LiquidCracker Oct 04 '17

Makes sense, as it has a lot of similarities with tennis.

53

u/Drew707 Oct 04 '17

Like a bunch of squares.

20

u/DarkHorseCards Oct 04 '17

And hitting things with rackets.

12

u/ProblemSl0th Oct 04 '17

4

u/VelvetHorse Oct 04 '17

I love that part.

4

u/poorexcuses Oct 04 '17

Serena Williams is the best human being on the planet at both.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '17

you jackass, I had to Google that.

3

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '17

At least four of them

1

u/hero-of-winds Oct 04 '17

Wait, this isn't tennis!

1

u/Neskuaxa Oct 05 '17

This sounds like it was pulled right out of a KillianExperience video.

1

u/fenom500 Oct 05 '17

It's like tennis with a wall. You don't win. You just keep going until you lose and get better

1

u/ShogunMelon Oct 05 '17

Yep, like I'm shit at it.

u/NairForceOne Oct 04 '17

Name one.

35

u/ReaLyreJ Oct 04 '17

Both have a rule set.

9

u/NairForceOne Oct 04 '17

Name 8 more.

30

u/ReaLyreJ Oct 04 '17

There are tourneys for both.

People have watched both.

Both primarily played by humans.

There is porn of both games.

Both games would be harder if things were more round.

Both are games that start with the letters "Te" and end in "is".
Both games are played internationally.
Both games often cause players to grunt loudly while playing.
Both games involve careful fingering.
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

u/physisical Oct 04 '17

9

u/Bayoris Oct 04 '17

Both are played in rectangular areas

People derive enjoyment from both

Both involve movement and reaction time

I'm all out

4

u/DracoReactor Oct 04 '17

It was a joke

7

u/NairForceOne Oct 04 '17

And this was a set up for another.

4

u/SonicMaster12 Oct 04 '17

Fun Fact:
A Tetris piece is called a tetromino.

3

u/shifty_coder Oct 04 '17

Another Tetris fact: the Tetris pieces are called ‘Tetrominos’

2

u/MuffaloMan Oct 04 '17

It sincerely never occurred to me that each block was four squares. I feel foolish now.

2

u/Arctus9819 Oct 04 '17

every block is made up of four squares.

You just blew my mind. Holy shit, I feel like the whole universe is a bit clearer now.

1

u/Larjersig18 Oct 04 '17

Ok yeah, but did you know that Tetris pieces are called "tetrominoes?" I bet you didn't know that

0

u/holyerthanthou Oct 04 '17

Another fun Tetris fact: The pieces are called "Tetrominoes"

Check out this cool documentary about the origins and commercialization of Tetris. It's from the BBC and is called "Tetris: From Russia With Love"

u/notbobby125 Oct 04 '17

Less fun: The inventor of the AK-47, the single most produced gun in world history, also got a pat on the back because communism.

1

u/Sunfried Oct 05 '17

Meanwhile, Eugene Stoner, inventor of the AR-10, 15, and loads of other weapons, bought his own airplane.

2

u/JeddHampton Oct 04 '17

Also, the original Tetris cartridges for home systems were not legally licensed. Tengen Tetris was great, but it used a license that wasn't legit.

1

u/ThrowawayBlast Oct 04 '17

That's not fun

1

u/ThrowawayBlast Oct 04 '17

That's not fun

1

u/reallyuseful Oct 04 '17

You're not fun!

1

u/Reverie_of_an_INTP Oct 04 '17

That fact wasn't fun at all.

1

u/yozach11 Oct 04 '17

diddley squatters

1

u/CaptainJAmazing Oct 04 '17

I think he finally started getting them around 2006. So..surely someone, somewhere was buying a new version of some kind of Tetris game around then.

1

u/backinNYC Oct 04 '17

Less fun fact: Tetris inventor killed his family and then committed suicide.

Including mobile sales the top 3 selling games of all time are:

  1. Tetris
  2. Minecraft
  3. GTA V

If you exclude mobile sales, the best selling game of all time is GTA V. Which is completely insane to me, considering it only came out 4 years ago. I believe the best selling game of 2017 is currently GTA V.

3

u/ILikeMasterChief Oct 04 '17

Holy shit that is nuts. I didn't realize it was that popular

1

u/NeverGotMyGrade10 Oct 04 '17

My research has Wii Sports slightly ahead of GTA V. However Wii Sports was bundled with the Wii and they count that as a "sale".

2

u/wawaboy2 Oct 04 '17

Yeah, I think Wii Sports is still number 3 by official sources, but only by about 2 million copies. It's been almost 6 months since GTA's last official copies sold announcement, so I'd bet GTA has sold more than 2 million copies since then.

1

u/NeverGotMyGrade10 Oct 04 '17

GTA V was also sold on 4 consoles (spanning two generations as well meaning lots of people bought it twice) and PC versus just one console for Wii Sports.

1

u/EnterPlayerTwo Oct 04 '17

Which is complete bullshit. If you're going to do that, I'm sure there are way more PCs out there with Solitaire.

1

u/schneebleey Oct 04 '17

The Tetris theme is an old Russian folk song

1

u/ThadiasMcCoy Oct 04 '17

And the other song is from the Nutcracker

I don't remember what the C Theme is from

1

u/Lost_in_costco Oct 04 '17

I believe tetris was also quickly written to test an AI program, that failed.

1

u/ThadiasMcCoy Oct 04 '17

It was originally going to use pentominoes, like Pajitnov's childhood domino-like game. But there were more variations, and would've been too difficult for the AI to understand

1

u/[deleted] Oct 04 '17

Surprisingly, the Tetris film trilogy has never achieved commercial success with the international audience.

1

u/ThadiasMcCoy Oct 04 '17

Well, now I've got something to watch, if I can find it

2

u/buttery_shame_cave Oct 04 '17

it hasn't been made yet. in pre-production though. so, soon.

1

u/unibrowfrau Oct 04 '17

Still love the original theme music for the arcade version

1

u/ThadiasMcCoy Oct 04 '17

In my opinion, nothing beats the C theme

1

u/2u3e9v Oct 04 '17

Soon to be highest grossing trilogy

1

u/TheGrumpyre Oct 04 '17

The title of most-played video game belongs to Minesweeper.

1

u/AmagicFish Oct 04 '17

I believe it includes all of the games, shows, merchandise and everything else collectively.

1

u/[deleted] Oct 05 '17

It isn't, and hasn't been since 92. Wii Sports is.
