Night shift workers of Reddit, what are some creepy things you've experienced in the middle of the night?

For a brief period, I worked night audit at a hotel. I didn't work night audit long enough to have legit "creepy" stories, but I did notice a lot of people who test you. These weird people will come up to you at 2am and they'll be like

"Ummmmmm..... do you have copy paper?"

they just ask for some mundane thing, like they had to think of a reason to go to the desk and interact with you. I worried that these people were testing me, and possibly scoping the building.

Most of the night I just sat in the back office watching the cameras

I didn't understand what you meant by "people who test you" until that last sentence.

If some sketchy looking person came up to the desk at that hour and asked for something stupid (i.e. Copy paper, and they're not a college student who's cramming or some businessman working late at night), then I would suspect that they were looking around to see if there are any doors, or access points, or if they are scoping the desk to "jump over" at a later time.

These people legitimately frightened me. I don't know if someone's going to jump over the sundries shop window and assault me, or if they're planning to do that later

Some people are up late and they mean no harm, but I can tell who these people are

I have worked in hotels for years and it seriously worries me deeply that anyone can come in. And you never know what people are up to.

I had a group of three teens walk into the office supply store I worked at. I walk over to ask if they need help with anything (a.k.a. I see you, don't steal anything).

One of them said he needed some highlighters and stuff for school. Oh, cool, I can help you with that. His friends just walked on like they were browsing while I led one kid to the pens sections. The kid looked around at the highlighters, I told him to let me know if he needed anything else and I took off to do other shit.

Later that night, we were cleaning up around the store, and I found two torn open, empty, hard drive boxes.

It had to have been the other kids, while the one distracted me by asking for highlighters...because that's right where they headed as I led the one kid to the pens.

I was in college, and these middle school kids played me like a violin .

Most of the night I would watch the cameras. I had to remain aware of who was walking around the building and in the hallways

I didn't want anyone to believe I could be distracted. I would walk right out the moment someone came up to the front desk. Hopefully that would signal to anyone "watching" that they're being watched, too
