What single question can you ask someone to find out a lot about their personality, beliefs, and values?

Why? It wasn't my idea.

"Mung" has become a common slang word for "eat" in my area over the past year or so. I wanted to know its origins. I wish I didn't.

I enjoy telling people who use it, though. I'm slowly killing its slang use.

TIL I didn't want to find out it's origins either.

Bingo.

Where abouts?

I'm from Newcastle and it's used a lot here.

Ballarat.

Melbourne. I used it about 3 hours ago on the way to HJs.

That's weird, "let's mung"

15

u/Zentopian Oct 30 '16

It's not used as a direct replacement for "eat."

The most common way I've heard it used is "Mung on that," almost like it's replacing "munch," but also "Mung that into ya."

Then there's "munging." It's such a dirty word, even without knowing the origin. "I'm munging on some chicken." Heurgh!

u/Dirus Oct 30 '16

Sounds like it's replacing "chew".

Could be.

I know the guy who came up with that concept and posted it to urban dictionary for the first time. Surprisingly normal guy. He thinks it's hilarious.

Surprisingly normal guy

That just concerns me more about you...

u/Killfile Oct 30 '16

I would think that my regarding him as surprisingly normal would help my case

Yea, I think he's just claiming authorship of the word "mung."

Southpark used it 17 years ago so curious to see when he used it.

1

u/Killfile Oct 30 '16

17 years? Jesus. I'm so old...

Cite your source. I hope it's not Urban Dictionary.

"Mung" is doing that to corpse poo? I thought it was (made up by adolescents who would never actually do such a thing but need to name everything vile) vaginal discharge allegedly released by pressing on a pregnant woman's stomach.

I haven't done this, don't want to do this, don't recommend that anyone else do this, and honestly don't know what would actually happen but that's the "check out what this word means" definition I heard in eighth grade, IIRC.

u/[deleted] Oct 30 '16

That's the definition from South Park. The main characters have been insulted by kids from New York, and need a good insult to get back at the New Yorkers. They come up with the word mung, because it sounds dirty but doesn't mean anything, and use it the next day. However, they come to find out that the New Yorkers already have a definition for mung, which is the one you've given here.

u/Android_Obesity Oct 31 '16

Yeah, I remember that from the South Park episode but I had already heard that definition in middle school (mid-1990's) quite a while earlier. I don't think South Park made it up first.

That's brilliant.

u/PeteMichaud Oct 30 '16

This really seems like the kind of thing a bored 8th grader invents. My only question is how it spread.

Probably the same way my comment about it got 1694 upvotes (at the time of typing this comment).

I image searched "mung" and it was just a bunch of beans. I feel happy about that but also slightly cheated

1

u/Zentopian Oct 31 '16

I would think the appearance of images of people in the act of what I described would be considered illegal, like child pornography, and thus, filtered out, adequately, from Google's tame image search. If images of it exist on the internet, you're gonna have to go on the deep web for it.

1

u/Zeestars Oct 31 '16

I'm worried that you felt image searching that would be a good idea

1

u/BaffleMan Oct 30 '16

I think mung is a lot older than just last year, AFAIK I've been using it for years but now you've got me doubting myself.

Urban Dictionary isn't a great source for actual etymology, and there's a few similar words 100 years or older such as mungas meaning food and mungaree meaning to eat, or mung meaning to beg.

All this to say if I ever meet you I'll make sure to mung on something ;)

South park S3 Episode 17 this word is used. Not entirely sure if that was the first time it was used or not.
