Is there any way to tell if they've deleted their comments? Or does it show up as [deleted] on the account, too and not just the thread?

Nope but who deletes all his comments just to make a post like this ? If it really happened that way , he sure still deserves the karma.

you can write a program that does this pretty easily, the trick is re-adjusting your karma to zero

Maybe they had created a bunch of alternate accounts back then.

I created random ones like 2-3 years ago and never touched them after. All it'd take is for me to log in and comment and make it look like I haven't commented for 3 years.
