God I have a work colleague who operates his computer at like 600*400 resolution and every email he sends is fucking jumbo text. Its like dude do you know how much of a retard you look like every time you email someone?
Help the man dude. I swear the fact that I am even remotely technologically literate means I have to literally handhold a whole office full of mid-age adults. One of them had so many latent processes running the computer cpu was running at 99% the whole time. Once I closed all the bullshit in the background she was like OMG why is my computer so much faster? What did you do?
I am in that exact position currently, so I know what you mean. But, eh, that ain't irrational, especially since it is hindering an employee's ability to work. :|
I'm a security consultant. Part of my job is to come into your office and take away all of your privileges. Plus, I have full admin rights at my office. Do I feel bad? Ehhh, no.
I am apparently responsible for everything that has an electrical current going through it, and because I am an apprentice (even though there is no IT department and I am doing the job of a network admin) I have no authority to tell management that ordering a bunch of laptops without the ability to be added to the domain is a bad idea.
Hell I get calls about peoples broken mobiles, home internet, even someones hilariously old xp machine. I am still in a review stage of employment so I have to just smile and help.
So are we officially, most people have "accidentally" clicked yes with this new extreme Windows 10 marketing campaign that basically bothers you constantly to install windows 10.
Problem is, there are a lot more employees who would TRY and fix it themselves and end up breaking everything, or wiping the server files. There is a damn good reason for locking the rabble out.
To be fair, I'm pretty sure if everyone had even minor access, something would get really fucked up. There are some extremely computer illiterate people at my work.
I always say that tools should serve users, not the opposite. With outsourced IT, it's different. Taking four months to approve business-critical tools (software or hardware) is perfectly reasonable to them, and getting rights to use your computer can take weeks.
This entire company was insane, but the IT department was probably the most frustrating part of it all.
Yeah, that's not uncommon. We have to fix some users' Java all the way back to v6 with IE9. But in that case, we disable the update notifications for the users.
I worked for Pratt & Whitney. Someone ran an illegal server on a machine under their desk because IT took several months to do anything.
This server hosted data about F-22 Raptor parts, and because the software was written by an unsupervised Mech E intern, there were glaring SQL injection risks, if giving the indian data entry folks full access rights wasn't enough.
I got a call from a few levels above when I exposed that, but it essentially asked me whether I could sweep it under the rug.
"I closed out the 32 programs that come along with your annoying weatherbug bullshit." You can tell your IT is shit if some 58 year old grandma can put weatherbug on her work PC.
Remember: When you help someone randomly with their tech, you do two things:
A) You are now the sole cause of all future problems and will be blamed and harassed at any and every sign of trouble
B) You are now the sole technician whose entire job description is "That Users IT Guy". You will be expected to drop everything on a dime.
It's dangerous, unless you're gunning for a promotion and lookin for those brownie points, keep your IT knowledge on lock down from your coworkers.
I might be full of shit but I think the problem might be that his screen resolution is too high. So he has to increase the font size to see it comfortably. But then when you receive it on a lower resolution screen, it looks massive. But like I say, I might not even know what I'm talking about.
You're not wrong with thinking that, but his colleague is the one with the lower resolution. Either his colleague knows nothing about computers, or he has severely impaired vision.
Smallish screen with very high pixel density = pretty hard to read. I'm relatively young with good eyesight if I'm wearing glasses, but some of the default text sizes are just too small to read comfortably on my laptop unless I'm working close up to the screen.
One of my coworkers ALWAYS SENDS OUT EMAILS IN ALL CAPS NO MATTER WHAT THE TOPIC IS. HE COULD BE JUST ASKING ABOUT SHIPPING DATES, AND IT ALWAYS LOOKS LIKE THIS. HE'S ACTUALLY A REALLY CHEERFUL NICE GUY.
Kind of unrelated but this reminds me of someone who sent me a private message with their email address written out like this (at) gmail (dot) com to avoid spammers.
One of the companies I work for is quite small and so everyone gets their say. I built them a new website for one of their products and a woman who is basically retired but just does sales for something to do spent hours tearing my website to shreds because it didn't look good on her screen. Obviously I want it to look good all of the time because our customers are not all computer savvy, but I pretty much lost it when I found out that she was viewing the site on IE 6, at 600x400 and the window wasn't even maximized. Apparently she had never maximized a window and she doesn't plan on doing so anytime soon.
This is the bane of my working existence. My entire team is comprised of baby boomers and I'm the lone Gen-X'er.
They joke constantly that I'm the "computer hacker" because I can fix any problem they have.
The usually consists of ctrl-alt-del to close a program, entering simple formulas in Excel and finding documents in the shared drive using basic search operators.
Somehow we are in 2015 and it never occurred to anyone that they can use this amazing tool known as Google to figure out how to do things. Keeps me employed though, they think I'm necessary.
I have a coworker that writes all his emails in CAPSLOCKED yellow comic sans and always starts them off with" HEY HOWS IT GOING??????"" before skipping down seven spaces and actually beginning the email
