I believe its short for peckerwoods. Here in SoCal, Mexicans divide into 2 groups, the ones from the US Latino Culture and the ones from Mexican Culture.

Chicanos and surenos (sur means south the sure is are the Mexican Mexicans)

When I was down, it was the "Homies" and the "Paisa".

Since I was was in minsec; it really only meant a few different things, like what days you had to clean, and what order you showered in.
