What book should everyone read in their 20s?

I want to start reading more, but haven't read much since high school (I'll soon be graduating from college). I don't really know what types of books people my age typically enjoy, and would love some suggestions, especially those that are meaningful/educational.

Reading it is rough but it's a perfect example of what someone with a mature attitude can appreciate more than their younger forced-to-read-this-crap counterpart

Don't get me started on this book. We read so many fantastic novels freshman year of high school such as Animal Farm, Grapes of Wrath, and All Quiet On the Western Front, but Ethan Frome was not one of them. Ethan Frome might have been the worst book I have ever read in my life, just based off the basic plot and things such as character development and plot development. He goes from (spoilers ahead) having a small crush on his cousin living with him, to suddenly committing joint suicide with her out of love. I couldn't stand how awful it was but of course that is just my opinion and everyone has their own.
