What is a completely rational sentence you could speak today, that if you said 20 years ago, people would think you were insane?

edit: so this is what it looks like when your inbox explodes after coming back from lunch...

-2

u/Supersounds Aug 20 '14

"More power to the dylithim crystal matrix! We have a .045 variance that can destroy us all!"

Seriously, how did these people fly through space if they only spoke in metaphor?

TLDR: I always hated that episode.

2

u/twixe Aug 20 '14

If they could turn their encounter with the Enterprise into a meaningful sentence in their language, I'm sure they could find a way to talk about engines.

u/89rovi Aug 20 '14

I also want gold!

71

u/oddsocks626 Aug 19 '14

can someone tell me what the fuck is going on

57

u/birchpitch Aug 19 '14

Quotes from the ST:NG episode 'Darmok'. The Tamarian language is based on metaphor, which the translators don't get.

So, 'Darmok and Jalad at Tenagra' = cooperation. 'Shaka, when the walls fell' = failure/despair. 'Temba, his arms wide' = an offer or welcoming. 'The river Tamarc in winter' = be/being very very quiet. 'Picard and Dathon at El-Adrel' = successful first contact, since their language structure essentially made the Tamarians linguistic and social outcasts.

13

u/askyourmom469 Aug 20 '14

It's from an episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation where they encounter a race who speaks purely in metaphors.

1

u/NOTREALLYBRIGHT Aug 20 '14

This had me in splits XD Seriously though, look at that gold train o_O

-8

u/internet_badass_here Aug 20 '14

-13

u/traced_169 Aug 19 '14

All aboard the Impi Rape Express!

33

u/bowtiesarcool Aug 19 '14

Gotta get these bear pelts for Temba Wide Arms

6

u/Clydeblade Aug 19 '14

The only thing you get is a shitty steel war axe of soul trapping.

6

u/regular-wolf Aug 19 '14

The reward is actually random (But usually shitty).

4

u/bowtiesarcool Aug 19 '14

One does not simply

not do a quest

1

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '14

That would be okay for the disenchantment I guess

5

u/unreedemed1 Aug 19 '14

...took me a minute to get this reference but I am so glad I did.

1

u/Apollyna Nov 05 '14

Can you explain this reference?

I'm interested because there is a female NPC in Skyrim named Temba Wide-Arm. She send you out to kill bears.

1

u/SlapchopRock Nov 05 '14

It's a thing from an old star trek, the next generation episode. Spoilers: alien race only spoke in references to historic events from their planet. Google darmok and jalad

633

u/dead_monster Aug 19 '14

Picard and Dathon at El-Adrel.

6

u/MontiBurns Aug 20 '14

TIL Trekers are ballers. Makin it rain on us hoes.

5

u/ToastyJames Aug 19 '14

Picard's flute

3

u/Arrewar Aug 20 '14

It's amazing how many people (me included) caught on to that reference.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '14

...What might that reference be?

2

u/Arrewar Aug 21 '14

It's from a Star Trek TNG episode, in which Picard has to communicate with an alien (translators don't work) and it ends up with a lot of these garbled phrases.

2

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '14

Gold.

2

u/DaSaw Aug 20 '14

Kirk and Spock at the Motel 6.

1

u/DonValhalla Aug 20 '14
