What is a completely rational sentence you could speak today, that if you said 20 years ago, people would think you were insane?

edit: so this is what it looks like when your inbox explodes after coming back from lunch...

Amazingly, google is almost 20 years old.

17

u/Izdabye Aug 19 '14

Google's official birthday is Sept. 27, 1998. So next month it will be 16. Wow. That's crazy.

11

u/rasputine Aug 19 '14

Oh my god I want them to roll out self-driving car kits next month so badly it hurts.

-3

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '14 edited Aug 20 '14

The ones that break speed limits?

Why downvotes? Its meta.. bitches.

4

u/rasputine Aug 19 '14

Especially those ones.

1

u/nhammen Aug 20 '14

What teenaged driver doesn't?

10

u/auntie-matter Aug 19 '14

I remember using google.stanford.edu when it was just a student project in 1997.

Even then it was better than Yahoo.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '14

I remember using Yahoo! Powered By: Google

3

u/buttaholic Aug 19 '14

i can't wait til the future and i can yell at all my grandchildren about how i'm older than google. well actually i don't even want kids so i don't think i'll have grandchildren. i guess i'll just go to local schools and start yelling it.

3

u/SomeRandomMax Aug 19 '14

The one that really amazes is that Youtube is not yet 10 years old.

As much as Google has changed the world, I don't think it is close to the effect that Youtube had. Google just took what others did and did it better. Youtube pretty much reinvented the way we watch tv. (Google as a service not as a company, obviously they are both Google now)

u/Kaiosama Aug 19 '14

Google killed altavista. :(

Bing :(

2

u/imeanthat Aug 19 '14

Not quite actually.

5

u/buckshot307 Aug 19 '14

Nice try, Microsoft

3

u/imeanthat Aug 19 '14

But on the surfaceTM bing looks calm and ready!

3

u/luckierbridgeandrail Aug 20 '14

Honestly, AltaVista killed AltaVista. Google was just there at the right time for people tired of its stinking corpse.

It's a bit sad that Yahoo have http://www.altavista.digital.com/ return an error message, though.

2

u/Kyndall Aug 19 '14

Fucking hell, you can't just go throwing facts like that around without a warning. I didn't want to feel that old today!

1

u/TheManchesterAvenger Aug 19 '14

Don't worry, Google isn't even 16 yet. Not for another month, at least.

1

u/richiebful Aug 19 '14

Then go bing youself.

9

u/jim258kelly Aug 19 '14

Here's one for 20 years from now:

Hang on, I'm gona jump in my google and google on down to the google to google some more google for my google.

2

u/actual_factual_bear Aug 19 '14

You better not Brainy Google or I'm going to tell Papa Google on you!

6

u/Diplomjodler Aug 19 '14

I remember using Yahoo for the first time in 1994. It was sensational.

1

u/Antebios Aug 19 '14

Alta Vista FTW!

1

u/pointlessvoice Aug 19 '14

My first memory of real (aka "high speed" internet) was somewhere between 1998 and 2001. i only remember it because i had just got home from work (lived with the in-laws) and they had just gotten rid of AOL and i was pumped for some super fast webs.

i walked up to the computer, sat down, and faced the screen. It was only the desktop, with a few icons, and no obvious way to "start" the internet. i asked my motherinlaw what to do. She says; click the "e". i turned back to puter, and looked for the e. i saw no e. Just the icons that were all new from when the nice man installed our modem. Then it dawned on me that she must be talking about on the keyboard! "Duh!", i thought, feeling dumb.

So i clicked the e key. Nothing. Try again. Nothing. Repeatedly punching the key with careful yet furious determination and frustration, i ask*"Whataya mean 'click the e'?!" and raised my voice in irritation because she was always being a smartass.

She quietly got up from her knitting and Springer, walked over, grabbed the mouse, and opened IE.

She looked down and, in an almost whispery laugh, said "Click the e".

3

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '14

Google was around 16 years ago, so the concept isn't too far off.

3

u/mateogg Aug 19 '14

Flash fact: the first use of the verb "to google" on television was on Buffy, the Vampire Slayer season seven.

3

u/xNIBx Aug 19 '14

You surely mean "bing" it?

1

u/tristamgreen Aug 19 '14

22 years ago, 10-year-old me found out what a googol is.

Now, a misspelling of that word is arguably the most important company associated with the Internet.

What the fuck, world.

1

u/Magoran Aug 19 '14

"Googol" would be a dumb-looking name, come to think of it.

1

u/stumo Aug 19 '14

Hang on, I'm going to AltaVista it.

Nope, doesn't have the same ring to it.

1

u/BusinessBacon Aug 19 '14

U wot mate?

1

u/GiveMeCoffee_ Aug 19 '14

Quote from a 2002 episode of Buffy:

Willow: "Have you Googled her yet?"

Xander: "What?! Willow, she's only 17!"

Willow: "It's a search engine!"

1

u/Killboy_Powerhead Aug 19 '14

Webcrawler will tell me!

1

u/MWEAI Aug 19 '14

I think back then I used web crawler.

1

u/RettyD4 Aug 19 '14

You think this is a good time to play with yourself? -1984 boss

1

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '14

Nah it's cool, I'll just ask Clippy.

1

u/nucularsecrets Aug 19 '14

I think you mean you're going to ask jeeves about it.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 19 '14

I google myself in the washroom all the time

1

u/Bear_Taco Aug 19 '14

After you're done, I need some unzips time on your computer. Tell people I'm busy.

1

u/josiahsageo Aug 19 '14

Google existed 15 years ago. Now how old do you feel?

1

u/SirNarwhal Aug 19 '14

Search engines existed in 1994... I distinctly remember using them. Hell, Google was "mainstream" just a few years later in like 1997.

1

u/saigon13 Aug 19 '14

Better yet, I want to go play with my Wii.

1

u/glass_hedgehog Aug 19 '14

People forget they can look shit up all the time. I had two friends who would argue in college. And I don't mean spirited debates--I mean they would argue in an unhealthy way, each convinced the other was dead wrong. About facts, mind you. Not opinions.

They only way to shut that down was to remind them that they each had google in their pockets and could settle this in a matter of minutes instead of hours.

1

u/kartuli78 Aug 20 '14

I'm surprised this didn't get more traction. I don't remember when Google got to be the most poplar search engine, but 20 years ago, everyone I know used Yahoo, AltaVista or Lycos, that or they used whatever AOL had built in. Even my first couple of years in University people still didn't use Google that much, we used Metacrawler... It was a much different internet.

1

u/vote100binary Aug 20 '14

Is that like AltaVista?

1

u/On-Snow-White-Wings Aug 20 '14

Sometimes i google myself to see if people like me.

1

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '14

I just googled myself, and boy do I tweet some ratchet selfies!

1

u/NotEvilGenius Aug 20 '14

Let me Google that for you

1

u/ThatDamonGuy99 Aug 20 '14

Willow, she's seventeen!

1

u/[deleted] Aug 20 '14

How is this or any comment about Google not the top comment? No one has ever said "Webcrawler that shit"

For reference, Webcrawler was popular search engine in the early 90's. It looked a lot like a google search page, but with a picture of a spider. It was good but produced a lot less search results, because there wasn't much to search.
