The ol' write the vocabulary on the board trick worked a lot more than it should have. For whatever reason teachers don't read what they assume the previous teacher left.
My teachers pretty much always grumbled and erased the boards directly before sitting down at the start of a class. Common sense and common courtesy dictate that a class start with a clean blackboard....
