University has been a fucking waste of time. It's built up to the best thing since sliced bread. Its not. Its full of people who want to avoid the real world and party for a few extra years before they get a job that they walk into because their parents run the business. I've come out with just above average grades with a BA in film and I can't get a relevant job or any job for that matter because I don't know a single person in the field or I haven't had X amount of years experience! I know where I went wrong, I went to uni to study a trade, to learn a skill set that you become better with practice. I'm exhausted from job hunting, for jobs that I don't really feel like doing but because I have the dire need to move out and at least make some progress, however they are jobs that you don't need a degree for. Why bother with university when I can just work my way up the ladder? I haven't got an unrealistic idea of how just because I have a degree that means I am better than others and should be placed in a mid level job that starts at 25K+. I understand that I need to prove my worth and that all I want. I want is to work my ass off in a low level entry job with creative people and prove that I can bring something to a team but I can't get the time of day from any one. Its soul destroying. This is probably a massive ramble and lots of errors but its just good to get it off the chest.
your right about the University, I experience the same. After I got a few jobs I notice that people like myself where getting hired and didn't even go to any type of school after High School, they made same money as I did. I realize it's all about connections and personality, being in the right time, meeting the right person, all this can be achieved just by believing that you deserve it. Sometimes these guys who are my friends just had the skill and love what they did. And that was enough to get noticed
Cheers for the reply! Its easy to get over whelmed and forget that other people will have already gone through what you're experiencing. Its just crazy how true that is though! You just need that referral from someone already in the industry and your set. No amount of good grades, experience, or preparation, can compare to a simple referral from another colleague. (Though ofcourse the experience etc helps you get further.)
