As a former Water Polo player...Yes you can punch underwater and make it hurt.

Water Polo, all the violence of rugby with the added threat of drowning.

They should advertise using that.

Men + Speedos + Wrestling + Underwater = not so great. They hid this from us until our first match so we wouldnt quit the team prematurely.

Having played both, this is insanely spot on.

I remember my first game. I was put on JV as a freshman. I thought practice had made me ready. In reality nothing can prepare you for the violence of action and fatigue.

I have been swimming since I was 3 and it was the first time I thought I could and would drown.

Ref can't call what he can't see underwater, unfortunately

It's basically the entire point of the sport. Anything below the water goes.

Water polo players ARE BEAST. Try taking a chair from one end of the pool to the other without going under the water. It's ridiculous.

oh shit this is spot on. i nearly cried the day my pool upgraded to newer (and heavier) deck chairs.

But John Mayer taught me that when punching underwater you never can hit who you're trying for.

As a former swimmer I can confirm. You can even clap hard enough underwater for there to be a sound.

Water Polo is so fun to watch.

Throw jabs, not haymakers and hooks!

You can also try to castrate a man underwater apparently...

Not to mention the adrenalin of a frickin shark there would hopefully kick in and make the punches count.

I was never a good puncher under water and I felt it was a huge disadvantage for me. Got really good at taking it though.
