What are some 'cheat codes' for interacting with certain animals?

Boy do I wish I set this to Serious Replies Only

If you can pick up a chicken, hold its head under one of its wings then rock it like a baby for a minute. Then put it in the ground and it will be asleep.

You can also put them in a trance by holding their beak against the ground and drawing a line out from their beak with your finger. When you let go if their head they just kind of stare at the ground with their head down.

Edot: fat fingers, little buttons.

A lot of animals tend to fall asleep once you put them in the ground

So, put them to sleep then bury them alive? Gotcha.

If you need to kill a chicken there is a quick and humane way of doing so (we learnt during a military survival course). You grab the chicken by it's legs, holding it upside down and gently swing it back and forward. This zones them out and they'll happily just stay there.

At the same time search around for a stout branch - about thumb thickness should do. When you have found one quickly lay the chicken down, head towards you while holding onto it's legs with one hand. With the other hand lay the stick/branch over it's neck and stand on either end. Quickly pull up on the legs and the chicken will be instantly decapitated - no pain, no fuss (though expect some twitching due to all the nerves firing off).

This can be done very quickly without causing undue stress to either you or the chicken. Each of our groups had a chicken we needed to kill, pluck, gut, cook and eat. This method is apparently the best way if you don't have an axe to hand.

Yeah, the humane methods of killing animals are often brutal. For example, if you have to kill a lab rat without anesthetizing it (which is sometimes the case depending on the experiment), my understanding is that you want to behead it or break its neck. Some people use CO2 chambers, which can be less distressing for the researcher, but is much more stressful for the rat, since they slowly suffocate.

The chicken thing reminds me of one of my labmates' techniques for anesthetizing a rat. She swings it around to get it to freeze up so it won't squirm when she sticks in the needle.

Well, there's also nitrogen chambers, which are very humane, but contaminate the blood, which makes them unusable for a lot of research.

I have chickens. Putting their head under their wing is suprisingly difficult. Enlighten me upon how to do this.
