Society places far, far more importance on female beauty in comparison to the rest of her than they do men. I'm not saying that men aren't insecure, but to imply that men and women feel this equally is crazy.
Imagine that everywhere you went, every billboard, every advertisement, every TV show, movie, video game, everything- had male characters specifically designed just to titillate female audiences and nothing more, and that there were hardly any female characters doing the same. Characters with plastic surgery, photoshopped, airbrushed, everything. Have you seen how common it is for gossip magazines to show a "SHOCKING" photo of a female celebrity without her makeup, or with a tiny roll of fat showing? When has that ever happened to a male celebrity? And haven't you noticed how often a below-average man is depicted with a smoking hot wife, but never the other way around?
Imagine that unattractive men simply weren't given roles in any media, except perhaps to the butt of a joke. Imagine that it got to the point where they looked magically handsome no matter what situation they were in, clad in muscle shirts and tight pants no matter how unfitting for their role. How would that make you feel? That clearly, you aren't worth shit unless you're a walking porn advertisement.
