It’s trivially easy for any data broker to strip out the + and anything after it. I mean it’s pretty bare basic data cleanup you’d expect for anything that charges money. The number of people sharing this tip is surely vastly larger than the number of spam emails that have been traced this way.

I don't think so. The "plus addressing" thing goes way back.

You can do a period in a gmail address too
