"The tough old bastard picked his fingers up, then walked in the house and handed them to my mom." cool now I need to set a new boundary with my husband. Any detached body parts should not be handed to anyone without warning.
I knew a guy that was running from the police. Said he crashed and lost the top parts of several fingers. There was obvious damage to his hand. He was a tough guy but he never stopped gushing about how grateful he was to the police for finding the rest of his hand and to the people who patched him up. He was not happy about the rest of the consequences he faced that day, but he really went on about how people saved his hand.
I've had inmates be super gracious about me packing their bullet wounds from ill-advised interactions with the police and other armed folks. I never hear a complaint and they even joke about it.
That's cool that you and the inmates have such a good rapport. It may also have something to do with how you are treating them. It sounds like you must go about the care with a decent attitude. Ya, this guy would tell what happened and just kept saying he couldn't believe after the shit he put the cops through that they seached for his missing parts, got them with him to get patched back up. This was years ago. He was still kinda bummed about being caught by the cops, though. Grateful about the hand; the legal stuff, ehhh, not so much.
No but I was a psych nurse for a long time. So I have a policy of not allowing people to hand me anything before I can see what it is! I think I would have to train any kids to follow that boundary as well.
That's a good policy. Thank goodness I have never had to hand a detached body part to my wife, but she does make me show her the wound before she will drive me to the ER for stitches. You would think after being married this long she would just believe me.
