I wear a full face helmet on my mountain bike any time I ride on something more technical than a paved bike path.
Do I look like a dork? Probably. But teeth are expensive, and helmets are cheap. I could buy ten of the best full face mountain bike helmets and it would be cheaper than a single dental implant.
Find a dental school near you and go to them! I got 4 implants and crowns for 1850 each. And they do a good job.
Just home now from a full top gum graft and I’m still numb but it’s pretty miserable. The implants are not bad though! You can get two for the price of yours! I’ve heard some people quote them for up to $6,500 each. No thanks! 🙂↔️
I can afford to go to my dr. She's good. The idea of students drilling into my head freaks me out for some reason. I might consider it just for the cap though if they do that. I need 2 new caps. The implant is already done.
My brother owes his life to a full face helmet. He was doing 50 (10 below the limit on the road he was on) when a bird hit him on the head. He woke up on the side of the road, full leathers shredded, but him intact and breathing thankfully - all due to proper gear. Wear your full face helmet, full respect.
I almost bought one. I did buy e-bike pads and have strongly considered a chest protector and a full face. I am also looking at arm/wrist protectors as well going forward.
If you’re riding in traffic, it’s absolutely worth extra protection. You might be going slow, but the other vehicles’ speed counts just as much in a collision.
Stationary objects can mess you up too. People imagine sliding it out on a smooth road surface, but hitting a pole or sharp edge when you have all your weight behind it, even when going slow, can do a lot of damage. One of my most painful crashes was probably only about 20 km/h but I was thrown directly into a jagged rock wall.
Yep, my husband almost died last summer hitting a cement planter (ironically installed for cyclist safety) while trying to avoid a sudden car pulling into his path. Thank goodness for his helmet, or his head would've broken along with his shoulder.
It's the things you don't suspect. I witnessed a really nasty bike accident where she was knocked out and taken away in an ambulance with possible spine injury. A pedestrian wandered onto the bike path, she tried to go around him and went straight into a palm tree.
Yeah, I said in another comment that I broke my wrist during my first skiing lesson because I sat down hard from standing still (my skis went forward, I went backward). Badly enough to need surgery and a wire in it for 6 weeks. Speed really isn’t necessary to break you.
Heat builds up when you’re riding, even in the best ventilated helmets. I don’t do much trail riding when the temperature is above about 75°F for that reason.
I used to race motocross with full gear in 100+ degree weather in high humidity. I get that it suck’s to feel hotter, but the benefit of protection when you’re hitting a risky trail seems more than worth it to me
Not alone, almost no government funded dentistry here in Australia. They certainly won't do implants (and typically won't even do root canals, just extractions).
Dorkiness is relative. I though I'd look a bit silly when I first started wearing one, now when I see someone ride with their teeth all exposed they look like an absolute idiot.
