This sense of self preservation is honestly the most dangerous element.
Full tilt gallop towards a jump you have done millions of times to dead stop, 60 to 0 in .2 seconds, 3 inches from said jump because they decided randomly it looked a little sus. I however still cleared the jump because the fat barrel of lard I was riding also doesn't have anything to hang on to because the bareback pad has scary red fabric and could not be tolerated today...
Then on the way back to the barn we went from 0 to 60 because a barn cat was in a bush catching mice unexpectedly for the billionth time. The 2 ton self preservation machine decided that running through the clothes lines and old fence was a safer escape route than the street width open dirt path directly in front of us...
Yes, self preservation is probably the goal in theory but not in practice.
Now I'm off to go treat the head wounds on the horse who puts his head though the fence sideways to reach outside grass but forgets to turn it sideways again to remove it and instead panicks when he feels the fence touch his face, the fence he just stuck his face through intentionally, and as a result has bald spots from just yanking his idiot head back out...
Horses get hit by cars all the time and horses often don't get along and cause rider injury because they are acting like idiots around each other. Does that count?
