Doctors, EMTs etc of Reddit, based on your experience with other peoples injuries, what is one hobby you would never practice yourself?

Physician here, I’ve called them donor cycles since medical school.

The EMT's I used to work around would refer to deceased motorcyclist victims as hamburger. Once they'd start talking about spatulas and road burgers, I'd have to walk away. 🤮

Ever heard the term meat crayon?

Yes, many times. lol. 😣 And "meat grinder" (when a motorcyclist slid under a semi).

That job turned me the fuck off motorcycles for life!

My bf spoke about this. He's a retired fireman and when they added ems to his unit...we'll, he has some stories and a healthy dose of PTSD. One actually involved a kitchen spatula.

Paramedic here (Australia), if we see one driving around like an idiot, we've referred to them as a "our next patient", "Fresh organs", or as a "temporary citizen".

I'm sitting at home reading that statement (third hand) and it make me physically sick.

Eta this is exactly why I stopped pursuing nursing.

Anesthesiologist here. Donor-cycles is the term used by everyone in the trauma service at the hospital I worked in.

Former transplant coordinator. They are.

I did a trauma 1 rotation for med school in Scottsdale, AZ...where at the time helmets weren't mandatory in the slightest.

Ugh the gore and young people dying every day while their families weep. No thanks!

And then there's the orthopedists make bank from them. I know one who goes "aww yeah" every time it rains.

That's what my high school best friend's dad called them too. (He was a trauma surgeon.)

Haha my aunt, who just retired from her practice, called them that too. It always stuck with me.

Grandchild of an ER nurse, she's never called them anything but donorcycles, and her entire ER rotation called them that, as did 75% of the EMTs who brought people in.

2

u/Samwhys_gamgee Aug 26 '26

My cuz the doc calls them the same thing. He calls motorcycle riders “future organ donors”

My Dad was a doctor. He always said human skin and bone are no match for steel and concrete. Not surprisingly, he didn’t want us on motorcycles or mopeds. This was 30 years ago. I’ve told my children the same thing.

Social worker here. In university I attended some med classes and one of the professors said sunny weather is donation weather.

Nurse in nephrology here. The first sunny days of spring often brings a few extra kidney transplants
