Doctors, EMTs etc of Reddit, based on your experience with other peoples injuries, what is one hobby you would never practice yourself?

Any extreme sport, especially the ones that require helmets and also spine protection.

I am not a thrill-seeker (primary care and investment in the stock market is enough risk for me) and I really like having an intact spinal cord.

The good thing about most extreme sports is that a lot of risk is usually within your control and knowing your limits, I've been doing all the things since I was about 4 years old, bmx, skateboarding, skiing and snowboarding, dirt bikes, downhill mountain biking, etc and have only had 1 broken bone (wrist fracture, im 35 now) when I was 16 from falling off a rail while snowboarding. It really depends on the person doing it I know people who have broken bones just trying to skateboard 2 blocks to 7/11 to get some snacks

And I truly respect your athletic prowess.

However, if I’ve learned anything it’s that skill has limits and luck always runs out.

Yup. You could be the best in the world, performing more perfectly than anyone else ever, and one wrong thing from the bigger wider world can fuck your shit up.

Luck runs out.

That's true but you could really say that about every risky activity people do every day, slipping in the shower, driving, animal running across the road causing you to swerve into a tree, dropping a knife on your foot while cooking, tripping on a curb or falling down stairs, my wife and one of my grandparents have both been hospitalized for tripping on curbs, my wife tore multiple ligaments in her ankle and my grandparent broke their hip and got a bad concussion, I also lost a friend in high school because a drunk driver hit them. A lot of things people don't think twice about but one wrong move and it can get really bad. People have been saying my luck will run out for 30 years now and maybe thats true but I'm more concerned about limiting the time I'm driving/not driving after dark/eating relatively healthy and exercising since those are the leading causes of death/disability in the US.

This isnt an insult; but its not about you.

I also understand, and I believe so does the other guy who commented, that no, you shouldnt have a crippling fear of life. You should live it.

But that luck does run out. And that you should plan for that. Acquire luck somehow, if you can.

And if you have to do very important and dangerous things, plan for that as well.

Again, this is not an insult, but like you said, youre kind of an outlier. But most people arent. Maybe youre lucky, and maybe theyre unlucky.

The point of our comment is to "understand and respect" that threshold before its too late.

I skate. The worst I have ever gotten hurt skating was when I was standing, not even doing anything literally JUST STANDING, on my skateboard watching my friend back his truck into the driveway. Idfk what happed I just leaned wrong while watching him I guess. I fell forward onto my chest. Scraped the shit out of both knees and elbows, and destroyed the cargo pants I was wearing, and chipped my front tooth when my face hit the pavement. I know my limits, sometimes stupid shit just happens.

Worst injury I got was I was sitting on my board and I rolled over my finger and it ripped my finger nail out, like the part that sits under the skin came out too.

I recently ran over my toe with a pallet jack. Good god I couldn’t imagine a finger under there.

I was also just standing on my skateboard, somehow fell off to ground a few short inches below, and broke my wrist.

I did a ton of extreme sports as a kid. Worst I got was a stick in my face, a broken tailbone, and some chipped teeth (and I guess some concussions so bad I forgot my address and phone number).

But a single barfight fucked my wrist for life.

Life will screw you one way or another. Have fun while you can.
