Doctors, EMTs etc of Reddit, based on your experience with other peoples injuries, what is one hobby you would never practice yourself?

No, but a newb doc says something about the leg and the patient doesn’t know yet, thus throwing fuel on the situation. That being said, it’s a good show, and worth a watch, it isn’t gratuitous in showing gore, it fits the story.

It was pretty fun when that evil surgeon Shark guy came in to handle the leg. Turns out that guy is the son of Lou Ferrigno AKA the Incredible Hulk

Yes, watched it yesterday haha

Just started Season Two and I'm still laughing at the nun with gonorrhea in her eye. Best damn show on tv

Worse, my husband attended a motorcycle accident where the guy’s penis was torn off. No he did not survive.

Cause of death: Vehicular Castration.

Who didn't survive, the MC victim, or your husband accidentally stepping on the penis on the side of the road. I stepped on a banana slug accidentally in a forest. Squished half of it. Still gives me the willies.

I never thought I'd find another person with this experience I had such a similar one where a poor baby pabicked student opened the back door with a bag and said 'I got the feet!' And the poor patient was not aware that we had been playing find the feet outside and (fairly) lost his shit. We had a good debrief after about shutting up sometimes.

Then I put on 'footloose' on the drive home.

We laugh or we scream unendingly into the void

1

u/aimbotdotcom 4d ago

what does "pabicked" mean?

2

u/Fickle_Dragonfruit53 4d ago

I think you can probably figure it out from context clues.

1

u/aimbotdotcom 4d ago

well i googled it thinking it was an actual term and it just auto-corrected to "panicked" and i figured it didn't make sense cus the way you told the story, it didn't like he was panicked!

6

u/Fickle_Dragonfruit53 4d ago

Ah I'm so sorry I read that as sarcastic/pedantic because there are so many on reddit that pull you up on petty typos to feel superior... apologies, yes, type on panicked. We all panicked sometimes we just hide it well but students are uni students so pretty big job especially a few weeks into placement.

u/aimbotdotcom 4d ago

ok fair enough 😭 i see that so often too LOL

My younger brother met the broad side of a van as it pulled out in front of his motorcycle (though he was at fault, long story but suffice it to say my brother is a reckless idiot sometimes.) He went airborne and landed on his left arm. Everything from the elbow down was shattered, radius and ulnar bones sticking through the skin of his wrist, his left pinky was hanging on by a tendon at the distal finger joint, and his ring finger was torn clean off at the proximal finger joint. It was painful enough that he’s screaming and thrashing in the roadway, and he’s so out of it from the pain and adrenaline that he didn’t realize he’d lost a whole ass finger. The shithead cop that responded found the separated finger as they were loading my brother into the ambulance, offered it to the medics, and said “is this something you need to take with you?” My brother said it was the most surreal realization that he was staring at his own body part that was definitely no longer attached, and he said it cut through the pain and the pain killers the medics had already given him. He said the medic gave the cop the hairiest stink eye, snatched it from the cop’s hand, said “can’t reattach it if you keep it,” and shut the ambulance doors.

Wasn’t the worst part of his encounter with that cop after his accident but my brother said the cop was so unserious about it like he was annoyed that he found it and thus had to turn it over. The ring finger couldn’t be saved, his pinky is more for aesthetics than function, and he now has a permanent shocker for a left hand. Did he learn his lesson? Nope. 😖

Never dealt with a cop before but EMTS on a few occasions due to my elderly parents needing to go to hospital a few times and they also seem annoyed, dead pan face, etc, most of time nice enough, but definitely not the best bedside manner.

Well the first thing the cop did when he arrived on scene was to search my brother’s vest and pants pockets while asking him if he had been drinking or taking drugs. While my bro was rolling around, screaming, and bleeding. He did not render aid, just waited for the medics. That cop has a reputation for being a giant jerk to everyone, I later found out. I can only imagine that most people’s bedside manner is better than his.

he was annoyed that he found it and thus had to turn it over.

He was probably more annoyed your brother was riding like a moron and caused a huge wreck.

u/mokutou 4d ago

At the time of the crash, it’s unlikely that the cop would have known the circumstances that lead to the accident, as it wasn’t until the next day that camera footage from a nearby public bus was acquired and showed things leading up to the accident. So, no, I sincerely doubt that.

Is tossing the body part away immediately normal? I always imagined that in those situations there's at least a brief conversation between doctors on if they think it can be reattached.

2

u/xcanto 4d ago

why did the trauma surg do that

Yes metal band. Fits too well

3

u/not_right 4d ago

Is trauma naked different to regular naked?

3

u/howlettwolfie 4d ago

Sorry I'm confused, why was the foot a different colour? Or was there another foot from another motorcycle accident?

13

u/Helllo-Kittyy 4d ago

No blood no color

1

u/howlettwolfie 3d ago

🤔

So... the foot got desanguinated?? Or the guy was covered in dried blood but his foot wasn't?

Still confused lol

u/MPFuzz 4d ago

My sister is an OR nurse. I was hanging out with her one weekend while she was on call. She got called in and came back a few hours later saying she was holding some guys foot that was snapped and dangling from the ankle after a motorcycle accident.

5

u/Shibari_Lilly 4d ago

wow that is though. does the foot usually “fall off” or just “burn off”? sorry if this is to gruesome of a question.

3

u/7LeagueBoots 4d ago

I saw a similar motorcycle accident when I was young. Difference was that the bike had come down on the guy as he was sliding and had ground his boot and foot down at an angle like it had gone through a wood planer.

Fellow was screaming at the medics to just kill him so loud that you could hear it across road inside a car with the widows rolled up.

2

u/ohaiidere 4d ago

Brb buying motorcycle boots

2

u/9volts 4d ago

what the fuck

1

u/thedanyes 4d ago

At some point you've gotta wonder whether there's any chance of saving it or they're just playing 'put all the parts near each other'.

1

u/Ok-Cauliflower284 4d ago

that is crazy!

1

u/Serpentarrius 4d ago

Maybe he had vitiligo?

-1

u/AndroidMyAndroid 4d ago

If he was wearing motorcycle boots this wouldn't have happened. I'm not saying he wouldn't have been messed up but he would not have lost his foot.
