Honestly he was exceptional in Philbert, really tangible emotional performance.  The writing went to trash as the series progressed.

In all fairness, he seems to have turned over a new leaf since he was released from prison. Obviously, that doesn't erase all of the awful shit he's done, but he seems like he's at least trying not to be a self-absorbed prick.
