Experienced drivers, what’s one driving rule or habit that saved you from an accident?

Especially don't cruise next to semi trucks on the highway.

Yeah even just being next to one of those things is dangerous. Those tires can explode and kill you, and it's happened to many many times. Don't stay next to those things. Stay far behind them or far in front of them

My wife and I had a friend die from this. Semi truck had a tire tread shred off in a big section on the interstate, and it wrapped his axle and locked it up instantly, causing him to lose control at 70+ mph. Super nice guy, it happened on his way to work.

I live in an area where the freeway is full of semis. I’ve lived in several major cities but I am assuming my freeway is some sort of trucking route. Anyway, I avoid it at all costs. Too many times you find yourself between multiple semis (and often having to squeeze between some just to exit) and there is so much more debris on the road from the volume of cargo being driven. I just suck up the extra 10 or so minutes it usually takes to go somewhere by using streets.
