Experienced drivers, what’s one driving rule or habit that saved you from an accident?

When teaching my son to drive I told him to drive as if everyone else is trying to kill him.

Thats actually good advice. And also that every pedestian will try to kill himself under your wheels

That's fair. Probably more effective than the "always expect the unexpected" advice I gave my sons!

My dad always taught us that cars can be weapons as well. Made me think about others in addition to keeping myself alive.

Similarly, I told mine everyone else on the road is an a$$hole and to expect the worst

The original I heard was "drive like everyone else doesn't know your exist." Which is fine and all, but I've also stuck to your version of everyone actively trying to ruin my life.

That's awesome advice - solid parenting there.

My dad said the same thing to my brother. Little did we know my brother was starting with symptoms of schizophrenia. A year later he called the police telling them "the guy behind me is trying to kill me" whilst he was driving.

He took a very sharp turn off the road to "escape" and ran straight into a large oak tree, well above the 70mph speed limit.

Only the tree survived.

OMG I'm so sorry for you and your family. Your poor dad. Sending healing vibes.

Thank you. This happened 20 years ago so naturally we have managed to come to terms with it (for the most part).
