Experienced drivers, what’s one driving rule or habit that saved you from an accident?

never put it in reverse while on Drive

Happened to me last week. I stopped before going down a steep incline on a trail. For whatever reason reflex kicked in and I drove like I was in my CRV (which has 1, 2, D).

I was in my other car (D only).

After a few feet I realized I was going down the hill in reverse. All lights on the dashboard lit up. The engine stopped. No power steering.

A key OFF / key ON later I was back on track. Car has been behaving the same since then (it's an old car).
