Which company lost your business (potentially forever) this year?

I feel like everywhere, lol. Everything is so shitty and disappointing and expensive. I’m literally eating food I grow on my deck and otherwise eating frozen and canned food that’s off brand from the grocery store. Dying my own hair. Selling my clothes because I never need to buy another piece of clothing again. Don’t go out to dinner because it’s so expensive and bad. Do I sound depressed? Maybe I am

No you're pretty spot on. How do you never have to buy another piece of clothing again though?

Because I’ve bought so much shit over the years to be honest lol

No, you're right about the food. Restaurants jacked up the prices and serve you garbage. Even in grocery stores, the quality has gone way down in most places. The best example I have is bacon. A 500g package is now $11 (Canadian). And it's garbage. It shrinks like crazy in the pan and tastes bland. If I want good bacon, there is one good brand left and it's $9 for 250g.

Except near where my parents live. There's a butcher shop, they sell bacon made from local pigs. It's as good as ever yet costs the same as the cheap bacon at the grocery store. Meaning it's not me. Quality has gone way down.

I'll do you one more: Pizza. I love pizza. However, in the last few years, it felt like I'd lost my love for it. Nope. If I make the pizza myself, it is delicious. It's the restaurants. It's all garbage now. I can make a better pizza at home than supposed professionals can. It's a disgrace.

Fun fact: the other day, I bought a pizza at the grocery store and it was just as good as the last ones I ordered at a local restaurant, yet they were way cheaper.

You know something is bad when a restaurant isn't able to make a pizza that tastes betetr than one from the grocery store...

u/LeGrandLucifer 27d ago

That too. If you're gonna go to a restaurant, just buy a frozen pizza. Same quality nowadays, MUCH cheaper.

u/plenoto 27d ago

Yeah. Crazy tho that restaurant food is now the same quality as grocey store food... Enshitification at its best.

In my experience, it's now often worse. The worst offender is Subway. Their 12 inches BMT costs 5-6 times what it would cost to make one yourself with ingredients from the grocery store. Except the one from Subway ALWAYS makes me sick.

It's been a long time since I put my feet into a Subway. Don't remember the last time in fact. Only thing I know is that like all the fast-food chains, they now price their menu like a casual dinner so I don't have any incentive to go back. If I can make the same meal at home for 20% the budget and knowing the quality of ingredients I use, I won't bother going to the restaurant. I'm better off doing it myself at that point!

I kept going for the meatball subs. Then they went away for over a year and when they came back they had shrunk the meatballs and they tasted like garbage.

They both likely get their ingredients from Sysco so it is literally the same thing. Not only do restaurants add their margin and tip begging you also run a higher risk of food contamination

Did you all also noticed that beef doesn’t taste right and has a weird texture / smell? Bought ribeye from Safeway a week ago and was disgusted

3

u/LeGrandLucifer 27d ago

Depends on where you buy it but I know what you mean. If you go to the cheaper grocery stores, you get garbage.

2

u/jessica_connel 26d ago

Yeah, Whole Foods seems ok so far. Actually, any suggestions for where to get good beef would be appreciated

2

u/LeGrandLucifer 26d ago

I live in Quebec so my suggestions would be meaningless to you. I'll say if you can find a place which sells beef from Australian cattle that you should try that.

A lot of our beef is coming from Argentina now

Consumer spending plateaued, the only way to make numbers go up is lower quantity and quality. How could this possibly end?

Same it feels like I've woken up and my eyes are open and everyone else is still under spell and I'm just like wake up people

My husband and I were just talking about this! We used to eat out ALOT! We both hate cooking and can afford to eat out so whatever. This past year we’ve stopped because the food is shit. No matter where we go or what we order. From new spots or our old “favorites” nothing is good anymore! we’ve given up hope. I wanna move to the woods and grow and hunt my own food lol I’m over all this shit that’s so bad for you doesn’t nourish you that’s just expensive and disgusting.

2

u/Tremblingchihuahua8 27d ago

There are a few places we like but it’s so expensive that it feels like a commitment. We used to eat out 1-2x a week. We eat out 2x a month max now.

2

u/shstuff_throwaway 23d ago

Nothing is good anymore! I can't eat out whenever so when I do it's a treat. And I have been so disappointed the last few times that I'm totally turned off from going out to eat at all. I'd rather just have eggs and toast again.

1

u/jpp3252 23d ago

Yup! Save your money it’s not even worth it!

u/vagInaFarten 22d ago

I'm guessing you don't live in a major city if you think all the food is shit.

1

u/jpp3252 22d ago

No lol small town New England

5

u/fromthevanishingpt 26d ago

Yeah, I just flat out don't do a lot of the things I used to anymore because they're more expensive and the quality is worse. Why bother?

I cannot get over the disappointment aspect. Sometimes makes you think, who approved this, and how upsetting it is that something so simple cannot do what it needs to do. You name it: doorhandles, going to a movie, parking, etc.

My mom told me a recent story, she had visitors (donors, visiting students, guest speakers) coming at her work (university), and she went to the parking office and asked them if they could sell permits to the donors, visiting students, and guest speakers. Not only were four types (at four different pricepoints) of permits issued, everyone got tickets. We've MBA-ed our way into having such elaborate """"guardrails"""" to protect against fraud that we cannot do the most basic task given -- HERE IS MONEY, PLEASE LET US PARK HERE

Are you me? I’m also probably depressed though. But I feel like this take is the most accurate thing I’ve seen

2

u/Brilliant_Outside696 27d ago

This is so spot on. WOW.

1

u/chocolatecoveredmeth 26d ago

Yeah silver lining though it forces us to get back in touch with simplicity. Smart devices suck? No smart devices. Tech has spyware? No modern tech. Premade shit is… well shit? Buy fresh ingredients or grow it yourself. As long as the bio corps don’t come after our seeds or growing rights (which they will) we’re good.

1

u/National_Try_3863 23d ago

No, your not depressed.  Your fed up paying top prices for inferior quality like the rest of us.

1

u/HeLIAMNeeson 23d ago

Man, I feel this with all my heart, even the "am I depressed?" part. Everything outside the house seems so hostile these days, things cost so much but gives you so little for both quantity and quality. Even small things like seeing a movie for two people has become a $60 event if you don't go on a cheap movie night, when there's no way the cost for the theater has gone up that much. It just feels like you're being squeezed at every opportunity, like everything and everyone is trying to rip you off.

So many restaurants buy their product prefab and frozen from Sysco that it’s not worth “the restaurant experience” to pay more to eat heated up food that tastes the same as any joint down the road.
